Lower Control Arm

Featured Replies

2013 Ford Focus se 78k.  Gonna do the front lower control arms.  I notice in the Chilton manual they want you to use new bolts for mounting.  Has anyone reused them without issue.  I’ve done it on a Honda CR-V and there was no prob.  Just curious thanks

I always renew the nuts and bolts for peace of mind..They aren't expensive (if you want the part numbers, look on www.catcar.info for the finis codes.) They're probably locknuts, which my Haynes manual always say to replace. But it's your call...

Here's a cautionary tale: Many years ago my daughter had the lower arms replaced on a Clio after it failed its MOT. A year or so later one of them failed and her car went into the central barrier as she was overtaking. It's lucky it wasn't the other one or she'd have veered into the traffic. I got a chance to take a look after the car was recovered and the bolt holding the arm to the body had obviously come loose and been working back and forth, elongaing the hole until it eventually broke through. I always suspected the garage had never properly tightened the bolt but we had no proof. We never used them again.

The moral is it's never worth taking chances with running gear. If the manual says replace the bolt then replace it.
