Hi guys, new to the forum as my daughter has just bought her first car, its a 2015 Ford FOCUS EcoBoost 125 Titanium Navigation with the 8" nav screen and I have a couple of queries about the sat nav - how can I tell how up to date the maps are? How can these be updated (what cost)? On her first outing using the sat nav it came up on screen something about completing a maintenance routine and took a while before working again.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated

Congrats, cracking car!

 

Look inside the center armrest and there should be an SD CARD SLOT and a USB port, you can plug in a memory stick with music or your phone which is handy! Pop the SD card out and it will say like ‘F7’ on it or F8 etc depending on the version.

 

I have the latest version and this is F8, these are the 2019-2020 maps :)

 

You can get the SD card on eBay with the latest maps for about £20ish, don’t bother with the dealer. Got mine off there and had no issues what so ever. I really like the navigation, much better than some of the others I’ve had built in.

Thanks Monks600 - very helpful. She only picked the car up yesterday and did a 300 mile run today and really enjoyed the drive, her first car although she has driven mine (KIA Sportage) a few times. Do I need a specific update for the car or will any F8 focus update work?

Brill, can’t go wrong with them cars! Engines are pretty much bullet proof.

Any F8 SD card will work fine, just double check what version her current card is. You never know, might pot lucky and already have the F8 card in there :)

Mines a 69 plate. Website says I’m up to date.

I believe F9 only applies to sync 3 owners. Sync 2 latest is the F8 card, this is 2019/2020 :)

I’m on sync 3.3

2017 year old Fords are getting F9 maps before 2019/20 plates. 
not sure about 2015 plates. I wouldn’t be surprised if they get F9 before later models. 
im quite aware of what year it is 😆

There’s different models, sync 1 is the 4 inch screen, sync 2 is the 8inch touch screen and sync 3 is the latest kit from ford. Sync 2 uses an SD card, I believe sync 3 uses over the air updates for the maps and the navigation is built in.

Sync 2 uses the SD card for navigation and maps.

Sorry! Extremely tired, I’ve totally confused myself haha. Yeah, I believe the Over the air updates are shocking and never reliable. Updating the firmware on the sync 1 and 2 headunit itself via USB was an absolute shambles as well.

I’ve never understood a lot of things with fords, they seem to do things back to front. Map updates being one of them! Don’t get me started on paint colour codes and trying to get the right colour mixed!

I upgraded the sync 1 headunit and swapped this out entirely for sync 2 (sync 3 is still too pricey for the headunit on eBay). In all fairness, navigation on sync 2 has been really good for me! I wouldn’t mind Apple CarPlay which you can have with sync 3 and then I could use Waze! But at £300/£400 for the headunit, gonna wait a bit for it to drop in price!
