Focus Diesel Engine Same As Mondeo?

hi everyone i am new to the site and have just bought a 2001 ford focus tddi.basically i have been using it for about 2 months and now the engine has started to knock. i am just wondering if i can replace my engine with the old endura de engine as found in the older escorts/mondeos? i know that they have the twin belts but can i just swap the whole lot over and run it on the focus engine management?

if it were only that simple the older engines arent that good a slight knock may be nothing to worry about getting it checked out is best first you have the immobiliser so the ecu needs to be linked and the ecu for the older engine wont be the same

well it is definitely knocking so i know the engine has gone. what if i use my existing pump will it fit on to the DE engine?

i dont believe so but dont qoute me on that usually the best option is toi fit with a similar engine from the same year

the engines do physically look the same and the only difference looks like being the belt setup?

im saying if you read this is the endura e is an old unsophistacated noisy rattly engine ....

The final redesign came in 1995, with the launch of the fourth-generation Ford Fiesta. This edition of the Kent was known as the Endura-E, and featured many revisions to combat noise and harshness. This engine would also feature in the Ford Ka and the 1.3 Ford Escort. This type of engine still has tappet noise even after adjustment. This noise is said to come from the cams due to incorrect valve setup or from age and use of incorrect oil grade[citation needed]. Despite Ford's engines being well regarded for their ease of service, the Endura-E has a very awkward placing for its oil filter, which is quite high up, at the back of the engine and facing from left to right rather than pointing downwards or out - meaning it is very difficult to access from underneath the car (without a mechanic's ramp), and despite being very short, the can-type oil filter still manages to protrude past the tip of the adjacent starter motor, meaning it is very difficult to remove using chain-type grips Its camshaft is driven by a chain. As a result, this engine exhibits rougher behaviour, producing more vibration and noise the belt is different the water pump runs a different way and needs heavily modified the oilf ilter obviously is different its distributorl;ess fitting would require the entire wiring loom and ecu keys ignition barrell way more work than replacing it with the zetec tdi unit it already has the engine it has is a better engine thn what you want to put in The Endura-E is virtually identical to the HCS and was used from 1995-2002 in the Fiesta Mk4 plus the Ka. The only main differences are an alloy sump and variations in the inlet and manifold system. Both are distributorless, using a crank trigger and coil pack for ignition.

it also refers to the endura de engine if you read it properly if youre not getting what youre looking for you need to consult a specialist all i can say is the engines are not the same the belts and water pump run in 2 different directions meaning it has to be customized to fit my mate does engines and said that the de will fit but with a lot of work and you will need the original loom from the engine and the ecu as well then youll need an auto electrician to code it all but he wouldnt use the de engine as it needs tio use ford only specific oil and its quite a noisy beast though it can do good miles if you read the topic with wikipedia right it starts off with the d endgine then tells you the difference between the d and de then the difference between the engine you have now and the de engine showing you the differences which ive highlighteed engine as well as the known issues with it i qoute

The Endura-DE engine features a cast iron block and indirect injection style cylinder head, which means there is a combustion chamber built into the cylinder head. This engine makes use of aluminium for some other components to minimise the weight penalty of the Diesel engine. It has a single overhead camshaft opening 8 valves via shim-and-bucket followers. The camshaft is rotated by a toothed belt driven by a toothed sprocket on the Crankshaft, likewise the fuel injection pump is rotated by a second toothed belt driven from the crankshaft. The diesel injection pump is a rotary distributor type most typically made by Lucas CAV.

For Ford Fiesta and some Ford Escort (Europe) (typically commercial and base model applications) the Endura-DE engine was a normally aspirated engine producing 60 PS (44 kW; 59 hp). However for other Ford Escort (Europe) and Ford Mondeo the Endura-DE also featured a turbocharger producing 75 PS (55 kW; 74 hp) and some models also had an intercooler and these produced 90 PS (66 kW; 89 hp)

It has a single overhead camshaft opening 8 valves via shim-and-bucket followers, and the camshaft is driven by a toothed belt which is driven from a sprocket on the diesel injection pump; unusually this pump is driven via gemini (twin) chains from the crankshaft. The diesel injection pump is an electronically controlled rotary distributor type most typically made by Bosch.

It has a number of improvements over the previous generation of Ford diesel engines, including the electronically-controlled fuel injection pump otherwise known as "fly-by-wire" In addition, the traditional oil sump is replaced with a cast aluminium lower crankcase and a shallow oil pan; there is an oil-to-water cooler, and a great many detail improvements to parts throughout. The engine has been a noted good performer and is a smoother, more powerful unit than the one it replaced.
