I have a 1991 escort 1.4 and the indicators don’t work.

hazards and all other lights work, fuse ok, new stalk fitted, everything on the indicator side of stalk works apart from indicators.

Can the relay fail but still work the hazards?

any suggestions what might be up?

It can be a dodgy relay or indicator stalk switch. You could also check the wiring multi plugs in back of the stalk as it’s quite possible that one of those isn’t quite seated properly or there is corrosion on the pins/contacts. Grab some electrical contact cleaner and remove the negative battery terminal wire. Then inspect and clean any contacts/pins that you see.

If that doesn’t work you might have a dodgy stalk. I had one where I had no indicators and turned out that it was a broken spring switch.
If after ruling these out you still have a problem then you would need to check for wiring faults but that’s way too much for me and I get an auto electrician to do the work.
