Ford Focus Keys And Keyfob? (51 Plate)

Hi guys

I've collected our new Ford Focus CL TDDi estate from my dad and it's running beautifully. Very happy with it so far apart from one issue.

There is only 1 key that starts the car. Unfortunately that same key does not open the drivers door, but it does open the passenger door. What has happened is the lock has worn out on the drivers door and has been replaced with the new key. The original key works fine in the passenger door and starts the car.

Now my questions are

1) Surely all modern cars have a keyfob with buttons to open the doors? My dads focus does not and he's always needed the keys. Likewise to open the boot he has to press the button inside the car.

2) How expensive is it likely to be to get all the locks changed with a new set of keys so that I don't need different keys for different functions. I know the cars imobiliser expects a certain key. Is this a ford dealership only job?

Hi,

The MK1 CL model did not come with remote locking. It can be upgraded very cheaply using a CL unit that has the RF function.

A good guide as how to do this is here. I did mine for about £30 including a remote fob.

The immobiliser [PATS] system needs 2 known keys to be able to add more keys that start the car.

It wont be cheap but sounds like a Ford job to me....

you dont need to go to ford and you wont need more than one key as the link shows the car can be programmed to the key rather than key to the car so they can clone keys etc etc etc so if you add the central locking you wont need any barrels replaced

Wow I was just gonna ask this question, I also have a Ford Focus CL TDDi estate 51 reg 2002, I was told it was a Mk 2 and have been very confused as some websites say mk 1 2 and 3 others say that its Mk 1 Mk1 facelift which mine fits into as its got the rubber bit in the bumper and that MK 2 didnt happen till 2004

I too have a worn drivers lock, have 2 keys that work, would have liked a remote if they are available.

Just tried the key switch 4 times from position 1 to 2 in 4 seconds and no chime so guess mine hasn't the module in as per link.

SO has anyone done the upgrade as per the link in the previous email and bought a secondhand key and reprogrammed it - if so guess thats what i should try - will await replies before doing anything - thanks guys

So essentially with only the 1 key that starts the car, I can never add more keys myself. I NEED a Ford dealer or specialist?

Sounds like a MK1 Facelift to me.

It probably would be a lot cheaper and less hastle to get the worn lock repaired rather than change everything.

Do a search on eBay for "FORD FOCUS DOOR LOCK REPAIR KIT" They will also build the lock to match your key for an extra fiver.

[other autolocksmiths are available!]

You need to check the CL module that is fitted to your car. You shouldn't need to remove the panel to do this

As I said in my original post I have done this mod with no problems at all on my Mk1 Estate so if anyone wants to know the steps required to fit the unit and then add keys let me know.

Following your guide I stuck my head under the dash and took a look at the unit we have. It looks like this:

Bit out of my league now I'm afraid, your module looks like the GEM (General Electronic Module) fitted to later models than mine.

Mine was the one with the pink label as in the link.

An 1S7T-15K600-AB module I 'googled' reckons it did have remote locking.

Have you tried switching your ignition from position II to 0 four times in six seconds to see if you get a tone? From other posts on this forum I believe this process is the same for later models. If you do then you should be able to add a remote.

Perhaps someone with the same module as yours can shed some light...

I have also been under the drivers side with a camera and it seems that my module is a newer one as well.

I have a key with a transponder but no buttons on to plip the doors - should mine have a button type key?

the original key i have is worn so i have had one cut, the keys open via the passenger door and operate the central locking, just found if I do this and pull the drivers door handle hard twice the drivers door opens.

The drivers door lock is worn and have tried to contact a guy on eBay who sells door locks and allows you to send the key for an extra £5 will match them but I cant get a reply from him.

I now wonder if i will have to replace the door handle too as the handle on the drivers side doesnt click when its pulled - the others do.

I enclose the picture i took of the module - what i was wondering was should this car have a button type key and open the door with the button, if so how do i go about getting one?

If you want to send me a door lock and key (or key cut code/key number. Sometimes a very good photo will do)I can build it to your key for £10+ p&p.

New lock from ford comes un-assembled and not too expensive.
