Mk3 coolant leak in footwell? But clips and seals replaced?

Featured Replies

Hello. I have a 12 plate Ford Focus 1.0 ecoboost, I started getting a bit of coolant in the footwell. I dabbed the o ring pipe with kitchen roll and it was getting pink coolant on it! I went to a local garage near me, and told them I’ve done my research and that I believe the clips and seals need changing on these pipes. They’d never done that before. They phoned ford and ford apparently said to them that it could make it worse, if it does, il need a new heater matrix. I said let’s just risk the seals and clips. Anyway, they changed them for me and when picking up my car, they said that my car didn’t have the seals in to start with. But surely it did, because otherwise it would have had these issues from leaving the factory and would of been coming out a lot more than what it was? Anyway, I went for a drive to test it was fixed and put kitchen roll under the pipes, however the problem was still there but now even worse!! The coolant level didn’t seem to move much, but the kitchen roll had a rather big patch of coolant on it. I then had to drive it a few days later to somewhere, 10 miles away. Before I went the coolant level was fine. When I got there, the kitchen roll was even pinker, so I thought the issue must of got worse. Before heading back home I checked the coolant level and it had almost gone!! The tank was nearly empty. I topped it right back up to the top again, and drove home, thinking it’ll be nearly empty again on return, like it was on the way there, but now it’s hardly moved again? I’m so confused?

the garage that did the clips and seals are telling me that I need a new heater matrix and that they’ve done the clips and seals properly, and are refusing to take a second look.

im wondering if the garage have left the old seals in, and not seen them? As I don’t know how it would of survived without them from 2012 lol?

any suggestions on what I should do? I am female, in Essex, not mechanical but no local garages have a clue what I’m on about. Ford will charge me lots to sort, so I am now on here not knowing what to do!!

any suggestions? Advice? Anything?

Thank you!

Hello. Thanks for the link, I’ve had a look but it’s actually a different issue, that is regarding the degas hose which I’ve already had replaced a few months back. This is for the heater matrix pipes. Thanks

Oh sorry that's me not paying attention 😂 I would take it to a better garage the seals don't even cost that much. Its a pita to get into there to do it but a compedant garage would manage it.

The genuine Ford seals cost about £4! (Do not use generic ones as the chamfer is very specific). But cost me over £200 labour to replace the darn things in my Mk2. Worse than that, after having it done, it failed again just a year later. When I posted my woes, there was an excellent suggestion which if it happens again I'll be getting my garage to carry out. Cut about an inch off each end of both pipes. Then use some good quality hose and jubilee clips to reattach. A permanent and cheap repair (once you access them!)
