blocked heater vents? outer ones don't "work"

jumped in the car earlier as i had some errands to run and, as it's cold, turned the heat to max, but while the centre vents were blowing like a gale, the outer ones had nothing

neither the flappy vents  nor the ones that point to the side windows

i've got the full auto dual zone climate set up so could this simply be a flap that's stuck or could be it more than that? anyone else had this issue?

i've had a problem with leaves being blown out of the side vents before and change the pollen filter but could this be related?
