Start button - How do you turn on your engine ?

Featured Replies

First car I had with auto lights was my Clio 172 back in 2004.  It was also not just a switch to turn the auto off.  You had to faff about with the key and holding the button down.  I remember being quite indignant about a car deciding to switch lights on for me, and then the missus telling me not to be so ***** stupid.  😂

Tom, I'm getting too old for all this, how hard is it to start a dam car these days?? I get in, twist the key, and off I go. Years ago use to envy the 'new' start button on cars, if this is the hassle

  • So having gone out for a very rare drive today (to get vaccinated!), I can confirm that I was talking rubbish. It turns out I get in, press the clutch, press the button and drive off. Who knew!

Good evening to everyone from hot and sunny Greece!!!

I dare to say that our health and prosperity worths most than any car and machinery in general...

So if we press a button a little bit different than the manual says of if we rev it a little harder it does not have any point at all...

Our health, happiness, joy and lack of depress are the things that really have paying the most attention in our short lives on earth...

Greetings fron Greece!!!

You don't need to post a message twice. Click/tap the 3 dots in the right corner of your post, then edit. Press save to repost. There may be a time limit in doing it, I'm not sure if there is one on this site though.

I believe the edit function was a victim of Brexit, but the government is working tirelessly to renegotiate it's return for our non UK members 😁

Next up...  Auto lights switch (for those without Mk4Fo/Mk8Fi)...do you leave it on Auto permanently, or do you switch to off position every time you stop like an absolute madman? 😮

If you switch it off, then what's the point of the Auto position...?

Clearly many people do this every day, as they make the effort to turn on their fog lights as well, just in case it is one of those rare days visibility is less than 100 metres.

Personally i like the automation in modern cars. Makes worth all the money you paid for...

So you don't see this? No idea why. Maybe it's to do with post count? I can't see how to delete/hide your own posts. I'd imagine you can only get that feature when you become a premium member and pay an annual fee.

Sorry to the OP for going :offtopic:

I was usually writting from my laptop but i felt a little lazy today after an all day's hard work so i used my tablet for a while and not all options were available.Soon all options were available again even on my tablet!

Thanks for the reply!!!

Going back to the Topic. I don't mind Auto lights. The car defaults to it every time you turn on the ignition. As mentioned in my post in this thread, I love keyless start. I'm not so keen on auto-wipers though, it seams to get it wrong (too much or not enough), even after playing with the sensitivity control.

Now the big worry I have about all this talk of how to press the "Start" button  is no one has addressed the problem of how to "Stop" the engine!!!

Many cars these days have buttons marked with just "Engine Start" may be they should fit an EXTRA button hidden away that says "Engine Stop" 😉

Oh keyless start is great!!!

As long as you have the keys with you it is ok.

I like Start/Stop button as an accesoriinside the cabin and engine never warms up enough in a medium traffic condition also because in big cities with a lot of traffic is something that protects your engine from high engine temperatures and reduces exhaust emmisions.

I dislike Start/Stop button when i am driving my focus in a cold weather because i have a lack of heat inside the cabin and engine never warms up enough in a medium traffic condition.

I dislike also Start/Stop button when i am driving my focus in a very hot weather because i have a lack of cooling from aircondition inside the cabin and engine never works enough in traffic condition just to cool me enough.

Plus the fact that makes my engine starting and stopping continuously thing i hate a little because it will probably make a battery problem or starter failure at the future.

For a long time Windows on your computer had a 'Start' button. You had to press (click) Start to stop it (shut down). It's now a pic of a window.

On my previous Focus (2010 Titanium Diesel) you went to get something from the centre console by the handbrake and as you accidentally nudge the Start button that was placed down there, the engine cut out - whilst still actually on the move. That a was a ***** the bed moment.

On the topic of the OP, I get in, foot on brake, press Start. I did wonder if I should press start, let the diagnostics run, then put foot on the brake and press the button again but as it never complained, I now skip the first press.

Me neither. At least with the Mk 8 Fiesta you can turn it off in "Settings" and have normal intermittent wipe instead.

Hence my start up routine - Sit in seat, depress clutch, press start button, press stop / start override button, off you go... (obviously seat belt on, check mirrors, take handbrake off, etc!) 👍
