Hi everyone

on my 2012 Titanium my refrigerant is full and the clutch engages on the compressor however I still don’t get cold air.

what would cause this?

Slight update. So I have put more gas in and now the passenger side blows freezing cold but the drivers side is not cold. Both set to lowest temperature on the climate control.

any help is much appreciated

How much gas did you have to put in?

You said refrigerant was full in your first post. How did you come to that conclusion ?

Ha ha

it’s 18oz on the tin.

it was completely empty. Not even pushing the pin in on the valve released any.

I connected the hose and can and started to fill it when the clutch kicked in. It’s almost as if it’s stopped taking anymore and  it’s just inside the green on the gauge of the can. In all honesty it doesn’t feel like much has gone in. I’ve tried putting more but it doesn’t take anymore.

Because the can feels like it’s stopped putting anymore in. The gauge no longer moves from when I first started putting gas in when the clutch kicked in. Could it be blocked somewhere?

That engines air con  takes 530g from empty. According to Google 18oz is 510g so whole can is required. Does it feel like there's still some left in the can?

Also the Aircon was empty for a reason. You might be leaking air con gas as your filling it and then no where near full for air con to get cold both sides. Know from experience that only the passenger side gets cold if low on gas.

This is where it’s very bizarre. The can feels over half full. I may even weigh it to precise but not a lot has gone in but the gauge is saying the car is full.

when gas goes out of the system over time it must get replaced with air. When refilling, how does the gas replace the air in there? Could it be air locked like a central heating system at home?

I mate cut my losses and take it to be emptied with a machine and replaced.

KwikFit do A/.C for about £50 (depending on current offers) They do a pressure test first, then fill it up. They also have a great money back guarantee that not many offer, if they can't decrease the temperature by their stated amount, you get your money back, so basically if it doesn't work, you pay nothing...

I took this offer with kwik Fit and about 2days after it gradually got warmer and warmer. I took it back and they refilled it again. They said they'd done a vacuum test on it so there was no leaks. It got warmer again and after getting fed up with taking it back I decided to investigate myself. On my focus the condenser radiator is a common fail and after I took a look, sure enough you could see where it was leaking (oily patch). I swapped this myself and took it to a decent A/C specialist, who ironically was the same price as Kwik Fit, who did a nitrogen pressure test and refilled the system. It's been great (well great for a mk3 Focus) ever since.

The point is, KwikFit never cost you a penny! Even with a 'nitrogen pressure' test, the leaking condenser could have been missed. 2 x main areas the A/C leaks is the compressor, or the condenser. In 40 years, I've seen enough leaking condensers to diagnose by sight. Good you got sorted in the end...

Kwik Fit charged me £60 and was happy to refill a system that was obviously leaking.

Nathan, what's your point? You got every penny back! Most other A/C guys will happily take your money, and if it does eventually leak out, well tough! You'll not get a refund. KF don't repair A/C systems, they just full 'em up, and if it doesn't work, you get your money back. For the vast majority of folk, that suits just fine.

No I did not get my money back, because as far as they were concerned, when they topped up the system, it blew cold air out of my vents. If I kept going back, they would quite happily refill the system knowing full well that the refrigerant would be released into the atmosphere. I suspect, even if the car failed the vacuum test, they will still have refilled the system to get their money. I guess what I'm saying is, there is no advantage to using the Kwik Fit service compared to an AC specialist as I found out 3 months down the line. Maybe it's just my local Kwik Fit that are not that good, but I have read others on this forum that share this view.

You should have been more assertive 🗣️ 😁, I got a refund on an old Merc after 4 x weeks! Maybe you're right, the KwikFit in Belfast is very good. That's why I have used them since with other cars because I know if it don't work, I pay nothing...

£60 is expensive for an old system regas.  I thought the benefit of KF is that they're meant to be cheap?  I've never paid more than £40 for a pro regas so far.  Of course 2 of those were on the Mk3 but I'm not assertive enough to ask for a refund after the event lol.

I don't think anyone will regas modern AC systems with the new type gas as the cost for those is well over £100. 😮

I've worked in senior management in retail for 4 decades, being assertive on requesting a refund is something I am blessed with LOL 🤣 You're correct that the cost of A/C gas in the last 12 months has sky rocketed, my 'proper' A/C guy could not compete with KF on price...

Oh, just checked the KF web site, and cost to re gas R134A gas is £49.95. (Lot to be said for being environmentally unfriendly!)

I didn't realise there was a new type of gas. Will this be used in the old system?

Nope, they are incompatible, indeed the filling nozzles are different to stop cross use. The newer one is more environmentally friendly and 3 times more expensive! The crossover date was 2014 to 2016, so after that, you are stuck with the 'new' one.

I noticed at the end of summer my A/C was blowing cold only on the passenger side,
It seemed to be a common issue on the MK3 Focus from what I found and some said a re-gas sorted it,
I'll be having my garage look at it soon now it's getting warmer.
