Hi

ive managed to pick myself up a newer steering wheel for my mk3 2012 Focus hoping to add cruise control at the same time but reading threw some of the how to's there seems to be a lot of missing pics. I'm wondering if anyone has successfully went from a 2012 steering wheel to a 2017 and got everything  working?

I have the second steering wheel with no cruise control hoping to upgrade then activate with the steering wheel in the first pic...

any help would be really appreciated before I start taking things apart only to find out it can't be done

thanks

You need the steering wheel, airbag and the newer MK3.5 clockspring as the MK3 one from 2012 is not compatible. Possibly also a new harness which includes the connector for the cruise control buttons.

It all works fine, you'll just have to amend some settings to enable the buttons to work and also the cruise control.

@kevgals has just done this, maybe he can provide some more details.

Thanks jpw I've bought the wheel and airbag didn't realise it was a wheel from a mk3.5 the ad just said mk3 I did try google before buying it but was way to many mixed answers about the mk3 and 3.5 steering wheels lol

you wouldn't happen to know which harness I'll need for the cruise control part?

thannks again

Just having a look for the clock spring aswell but there doesn't seem to be any mk3.5 they all just date from 2011-2018

Hi Garry, you will also need the clockspring assembly. I will be fitting my clockspring tomorrow. I'll post tomorrow evening and confirm that all is okay and give you the correct part number for the clockspring. I already had cruise but I understand that when you have fitted your new steering wheel and clockspring it should just be a case of activating cruise as per the guides in this forum.

Hard to distinguish, I was sent the wrong one first. I think a safe bet would be to go for one from a 2016 car onwards.

Steering wheel removal is easy, airbag removal is a bit of a pain, there are some guides on YouTube. Yo will need a 24mm socket and ideally a torque wrench for re-assembly. I have the same new wheel as you, looks good.

Thanks. I'm going to message the seller I bought the wheel and airbag off see if he still has the clockspring that actually came off the same car but if he doesn't if you can give me the part number you've got working that would be great thanks again

I believe this is the one.

I am looking to do this also but the airbag price is ridiculous, considering you can pick up the leather steering wheel for a 1/3 of the price of that.

Yeah that's why I jumped into buying the one I did it was a bargain complete wheel in perfect condition most sellers were asking what I paid just for the steering wheel.

This is what I have to fit tomorrow

Good luck with it!

Ill just need ti make sure the garage i use can active it right but they do all the mapping to cars so im assuming they should be able to active cruise control. My other worry is will I lose the abality to scroll threw the trip computer with it only having controls on one side of the steering wheel?

The left hand controls will control the trip computer, but you will lose the ability to control the original BVC/SYNC1 radio as these steering wheels are designed to work with SYNC 2/3 which is touchscreen. Most people who fit these steering wheels have already upgraded to SYNC 3 so it's fine.

Haven't had time today guys. Hopefully get time this weekend. Will let you know when it's sorted.

I managed to get the matching clock spring to go with the steering wheel I bought so I'm hoping I'll get it early this week then I just need to brave the airbag removal lol

Release the spring clips first, just so the airbag is ready to be removed, but don't remove it. Disconnect the battery then leave it for at least 10 minutes. You should then be fine ti disconnect the airbag.

Been decorating all weekend, hopefully I should get a chance to replace my clockspring tomorrow.

Success

I changed the clockspring but still had no cruise control, fortunately I purchased the clockspring complete with the indicator/wiper stalks etc.

Everything now working as expected.

Worth bearing in mind that my car is 2012 C Max and I think that they lag behind (parts wise) the Focus. I don't know wether the full assembly would be needed with all Focus'sThe only difference I can see on the indicator/wiper stalk PCB is a small capacitor on the left hand side behind the clockspring. Before changing this I had a DTC- B112B, Steering wheel module, mechanical errors, which couldn't be cleared. After replacement DTC cleared and all good.

Nice one, well done! Was the existing cabling the same from your old steering wheel? I believe yours had the separate volume stalk like mine? Guessing that just connected to the right hand road on the new wheel?

@JPW, yes mine was the same as yours. Just replaced the wheel, airbag, clockspring and stalk assembly. No wiring or programming changes. Both D-pads work as expected, cruise control fully operational. Was a bit worried when cruise didn't work after changing the clockspring. Fortunately after many hours of research I found the solution.

Ah nice one glad it all worked out looks so much nicer!

Did you program cruise control yourself or was it already a feature on yours?
