I have a mk3 focus with ford hands free

Does anyone know where the microphone is as I keep getting the message "speech not recieved!

It's part of the front interior light/sunglasses holder trim.

I doubt there's anything wrong with the microphone itself, most problems are usually down to the SYNC module itself (located behind the stereo).

What's it like when making a phone call?

Try doing a master reset of SYNC from the menu in the radio, or failing that then remove the fuse for 30 mins.

Try turning the bluetooth volume up on your phone whilst in a call (not driving obviously)

I can accept a call through the stereo and hear everything just no speech from me in the car

Have you tried a different phone, to rule out whether it's not an issue with your phone?

I have now and it makes no difference. 

If I try to voice dial eventually the radio gives in saying no speech and if I answer a call on the stereo or steering wheel button. The caller can hear nothing at all from me

Check the microphone first and that all the connections are made

Found the paddle in the steering wheel to operate speech was really dusty so I cleaned it and belied it or not it now works!
