2007 focus diesel what to look for

Featured Replies

Hi

I'm thinking about buying a 2007 focus cmax 1.6 diesel with 135k.

Never had a ford, I néed a car quite quickly and not having one at the moment it's hard to see cars further away, the focus is convenietly local.

Car is quite tidy, only issue when setting off there's a bit of noise when pressing the accelerator in 1st - 3rd which went away after a few minutes and didnt come back when I slowed down to test it in those gears again. Lady selling says her mechanic doesn't know what it is, could it be trapped air in the system somewhere?

I don't know if the clutch has been done, its not low and easy to press so I'm probably going to gamble that the clutch will be fine.

Car seems pretty sound apart from this, all new tyres and brake pads changed last year on the docs. Looking through history it's pretty much done 10k a year for the last 10 years.  Nowt too glaring on recent mot's, lamps and the brake pads.

Bit of corrosion in spots which is mentioned on the last mot as not being a structural issue yet. Only really expecting to have it a year, price is £700 down from £750.

Just wanted to ask the Ford forum if any issues I should look at for this model Ford before I buy?

Cheers

Matt

Cambelt is well overdue so that's a gamble if you've no proof of it being done.

Main issue with this engine is carbon deposits in the oilways that ultimately blow the turbo.  Also, if it's a 110bhp model it'll have an older additive type DPF which can be problematic.

As long as it's got decent MOT, it's probably worth a punt at £700.

Can you explain the noise any better?  Gurgling after cold start is likely to be an airlock in the cooling system.

Cheers,

Im not sure if the cambelts been done, I need to ring the seller so I can ask.

The noise went when I pressed the accelerator the whole way, just when first putting my foot on it in lower gears, after a few minutes it had gone, or at least I couldn't hear any problem. Sort of a hissing sound, hard to describe really.

. The engine seemed a bit noisy in general but I just put it down to being an oldish diesel. It is a bit of a punt its just been a pain In the ***** trying to arrange to see different cars, it's just this accelerator sound which is putting me off really.

Read about the dpf on this engine. I wont be much stop-start kind of driving so hopefully that should be alright.

Not sure I can offer any more suggestions on that noise without actually hearing it unfortunately.  They are quite noisy overall (bought mine on 46k) so that's not necessarily a concern.

It sounds as though if it's an airlock it's not a huge expenditure to fix? If that is what it is.

Well I bought the focus. Took it for another drive about 5 miles and it was fine. Driven to the shop today and it was making the noise in 1st - 3rd again, on the way home nothing. Odd. Seems to do it mostly In low gears and high revs. I've got a couple of interviews that I need to get to this weekend so I was a bit in need of a car otherwise I probably wouldnt have bought it to be honest. I've got a decent local garage I can get to have a look at it next week and see if it's an easy problem to fix, I don't think it's anything to do with the dpf since theres no warning or error lights on the dash and the last owner said they were driving it to Devon and back regularly for work. (from North Yorkshire).

Its quite nice to drive other than that, bigger than i need but the boot is quite big, good for our two dogs and the insurance is cheap. Will let you know what's causing the noise, hopefully won't have to sell it.

Cheers for your help
