2013 Focus 1.6 TDCI mk3 intermittent power loss

Featured Replies

Hi All, newbie here. I need some help diagnosing an intermittent power loss issue. My daily commute is 80 miles each way, my 1.6 TDCI mk3 focus is suffering power loss intermittently. The car starts the first 8 to 10 miles OK then it suffers power loss. Car gets slower and slower in 5th or 6th. If I drop it to 3rd it will rev to 3,500 at 60mph but no more. If I change to 4th revs will drop but speed stays the same. If I encounter any sort of incline speed drops. It can drop to 45 mph which is painful. Once I am on the motorway I can rev the car to 3,500 and 60mph keeping it there until it clears. Car will then be OK for numerous miles before it happens again. It feels like the car isn't getting boost from turbo while it is suffering power loss. The car has had a new EGR valve and has had the fuel filter changed.

I have an ELM327 and it shows no fault codes. I have cleaned the MAF sensor and the MAP sensor bit this has made no difference. I checked the vacuum system for splits but couldn't see any. Any help anyone can offer will be gladly received.

I am no expert but If you have ELM327 capable enough I would use Forscan live data capture to monitor the MAP and MAF pressure and also fuel rail pressure (FRP) throughout the drive, that way you can see what happens to the turbo and diesel pressure before and during the power loss. It will look something like that

It may also be EGR related, even if it is new maybe when it gets warm (after 8 - 10 miles) it gets stuck in a partialy open position and doesnt allow the car to get enough fresh air to reach higher rpm (EGR should be completely closed above 2500 rpm or so). Was the same thing happening before EGR replacement? I am sure you will also be able to montior EGR live with forscan, I just dont have any experience with it since mine is blanked.

Hope it helps.

Thanks for that. I will give it a try. I have tried it with the EGR disconnected. It make no difference.
