2007 1.8TDCi stalling on startup

Featured Replies

Having problems with my Focus. 2007 1.8TDCi.  It's done 160000 miles so don't want to spend much on it.

The engine will start, but sometimes when I start moving it stalls.  I've only seen this when I'm reversing, but i suspect it will do the same it I drive out forward.  After that the engine won't start and fails to fire, although it turns over.  I can get it started easily enough by squirting some Easy Start into the engine, and when it's running it seems ok.  It's just getting more that the initial few feet that's the problem.

Garage has checked and gets a low pressure error reading.  The garage had cleaned the injectors and had a quick look around, but it's at the point he has to start replacing things.  It seems it can have a number of causes so where do you start?

Anyone else seen this, and what is the solution?

Thanks

My 2007 1.8 TDCi had very similar problem. It always started but the revs dropped or the engine even stalled, especially going backwards after starting. The fix was incredibly easy, it is the EGR malfunctioning and choking the engine! After installation of a cheap EGR blank plate (5-10 eur) from ebay, the engine runs and revs miles better and no rpm drops or stalling whatosever. It is the best mod you can do and very worth trying as I am almost sure it will solve your problem. When installing the blank plate be careful to make sure there is no leaks around the blank plate and also not to strip the threads since the EGR is made from aluminium.

Thanks for the advice.  Definitely worth a try.

Was your problem worse in the cold/wet?  I can get it running and it will work for a few starts, then it will stall.  It seems to happen most in the cold or wet.  It's warm today and I've been able to start it and drive around twice.

If it does stall I just have to squirt in the Easy Start and the process repeats.  I don't feel comfortable driving it because I'm not sure if it will stall while driving which I've read happens to other people.  But my stalls have all been when starting and reversing less than 2 metres.

Yes it happend only during colder and wetter winter / autumn mornings and only when reversing after cold start.
