Sudden SatNav Problems

Featured Replies

Hi,

For some unknown reason, all of a sudden my Focus 59 plate SatNav has decided to add a huge offset to its current location.  It is a TravelPilot FX.

I initially thought the GPS receiver had given up but when I am driving, the map location is updating albeit with the wrong location - I am just miles off in the wrong location and driving through fields and rivers!!

I tried a manual calibration but this has done nothing.

So, I wondered whether some corruption occurred and whether an update will fix this but I don't know what the current firmware is.  This is what I can see from the unit.

I'm not sure whether this is showing firmware version for the TravelPilot (if so how do I determine the version) or just the map version.

What are SW_Main and SW_Navi?

Would a update of the firmware or maps actually help?  Are there any other reasons this might happen?

I had a look at what I was supplied which was a CD case but the plastic insert is moulded for the SD card so it doesn't look like there is any supplied means to reinstall anything as the SD card is already in the unit.

Thanks

Had this but on my Mk3, but mine thought it was in Belfast (I live in Birmingham)

It was in fact the GPS antenna at fault, even though the Sat nav still knew I was in motion and even what direction I was travelling in, it would never zero in on my exact location.

I just purchased a cheap Fakra GPS unit off Ebay and stuck it to the underside of my dash and it sorted the problem.

Have you tried a master reset?

what year is the maps on the cd, as i got a feeling your maps will be well out of date and you`ll need to get the latest 2020 maps to fix most of your problems i think

Have you pressed the info (i) button as this will tell you how many satellites the unit is picking up.

After further investigation, some of your replies are spot on.

I've noticed if I zoom to an appropriate level, you can make out that I am moving but I appear in random places on the map.  I've looked in to the number of satellites and it always says zero even though I move about on the map whilst driving, so I think the GPS has had it by the sounds of it.

I'm open to trying a hard reset but I cannot find a manual online so I've no idea how to do this.

Thanks for your replies guys

Thanks for this, I'll give that a go.

Do you know where the GPS antenna is located on a 59 plate (MK2)?  Even if I get a replacement then I'll need to know where to connect the wiring...

On the Focus MK2/MK2.5 the GPS antenna is located in the antenna base. Failure of the GPS antenna as a result of water ingress is very common.

The original Focus MK2/MK2.5 GPS antenna base has no longer been available for Years. As a replacement Ford offers an expensive conversion kit that consists of a normal (non GPS) antenna base, new antenna wiring and a seperate GPS antenna that is installed inside the car (behind the windscreen).

A much cheaper alternative is an aftermarket GPS antenna with Fakra connector. These can be found on Ebay/AliExpress for less than €10,-.
