MK2 2.0 Petrol Electrical / Horn Issue

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Very strange issue. Whenever I turn the key to the ignition on (level 2), my horn goes off in one continuous beeeeeeeeeep for approx. 4-5 seconds and then it turns off and the car is otherwise normal again. Checked the fuses, reset the ECU, tried a battery reset, so far nothing. I'm using the one main key fob I have, and I'm pretty sure the ant-theft is disabled. Can start the car just fine, except for the horn issue. Had my mechanic pull codes, nothing related.

Not sure if my car is haunted or what, but I'm quite tired of waking the neighbors. Anyone have any idea?

Now my car is really spazzing out. I pulled the horn fuse for now cuz i didn't want to annoy my neighbors, and now this just happened:

Traction Control Fault, ABS Light, and Traction Control light all at once? Is this also an electrical issue? Is this related to my horn issue? Any insight would be of great help!!! Thank you so much!!

I should also add that after I pulled the fuse for the horn out, i was able to drive around for a little bit with no issues. Roughly 10-15 km later, the traction control stuff started happening.

It's normal on cars that fuses sometimes control more than one circuit, its also normal that the handbook fails to mention all of the circuits that the fuse is for.

I would put the fuse back and just pull the wire off the horn and that might fix both problems

Pulling the wire off the horn involves opening up the steering wheel right? I'm a bit squeamish about that cuz I don't want to set the airbag off. Also, does that disable the horn permenantly?

Just open the bonnet, find the horn and take the wire off it, and yes that will disable it. Don't take the steering wheel apart !!!!!

Horn situated just in front of radiator, simple pull off connection, though no horn is illegal and an MOT failure. Better off getting the fault repaired...

Thanks for this! And yes, I do want to fix the fault but my mechanic and myself are at a loss currently. We fear this could be a GEM replacement (which is $$$$$$).
