Aftermarket Tachometer Install

Featured Replies

I have purchased an after market tachometer to install in my Focus MK2 Facelift.

Does anyone know which wire I need to splice into at the back of the instrument cluster?

I have looked at the wiring schematics but I can't seem to find what I am looking for...

Normally the signal for an after market Tacho is taken from the low voltage side of the Coil/Coil Pack, but you won't have that signal on the instrument cluster of a car that did not originally have a tacho fitted.

It already has a tachometer installed on the instrument cluster

That's what confused me, I thought it had one factory fitted, so I wondered why anyone would want a second one fitted LOL

I got a ST Gauge pod cheap off ebay, looking to fit a few gauges in there so it is not just cosmetic

On my last car I installed some extra gauges, but I wouldn't even think of duplicating an existing one LOL Surely there must be another gauge you want?

From the Focus MK2 onwards both the instrument cluster and the additional ST/RS gauges are controlled by CANbus communication. There simply are no analog signals.

Some MK2 and all MK2.5 GEM modules however support an analog speed pulse signal that is intended to be used for a taximeter or aftermarket satnav system. This signal can also be used for an aftermarket tachometer. If your GEM module/fuse box supports the analog speed signal it can be found on Pin 8 of the C98 connector of the GEM module/fuse box. Connector C98 is the small black square connector at the front of the GEM module/fuse box.

Very good information JW1982 👍.

I still don't know why anyone would want 2 tacho's - maybe one going forwards and one for going backwards ? 🤣

No, but funnily enough VW Group also seem to think so. Most versions of the Up!/Mii/Citigo have a tacho in the instrument display but the pre-facelift models could be had with an additional "maps and more" unit with Sat nav that plugged into a slot in the top of the dash. This could also be configured as additional instruments, including a tacho. As the original tacho is about the size of a 10p piece it makes some sense I suppose!
