Garye Posted June 9, 2021 Share Posted June 9, 2021 Have just bought a nearly new demonstrator car which only has the fluid emergency tyre repair kit. I understand like to have a spare tyre or space saver tyre instead. Ford part department have told me that neither would fit into the boot space - which I totally disagree with. Bobr Posted June 9, 2021 Share Posted June 9, 2021 I have a 2017 Fiesta with a space saver Spare. Bought from eBay unused for £80. I cannot use the pump up stuff as it consists of pure latex and my wife is allergic to it. She has the Type 1 Latex Allergy and goes into anaphylactic shock if she comes into contact with it. I cannot understand how it is allowed to be used in this way as it was declared a dangerous substance by the DofE some years ago and only to be used where absolutely necessary. Not sure where your parts department are coming from seeing as a spacesaver spare is a factory option on Fiestas except where a pan roof is fitted. Sorry not into cars just want a saver tyre in case of emergency. anon Posted June 9, 2021 Share Posted June 9, 2021 Even with a pan roof, it is possible to fit a space saver although I think mine was a 175 section which I bought with the jack and wheelbrace kit for about £100. Pan roof cars are heavier so adding a spare bumps them up a tax bracket if you buy one from new. but if it is luggage 😉 (Tax brackets are funny things. Ford Escort with 1100cc Renault engine and 3.50 rims? Standard spec in Denmark in 1985. 242% purchase tax and >50% income tax on the minimum wage saw to that. The space saver wheel is designed for emergency use only and the wheel has the correct tapper on the holes to allow your normal wheel nuts to be used. AlanC2 Posted June 11, 2021 Share Posted June 11, 2021 I recently (two weeks ago) purchased a spare wheel kit from the Ford dealer. It consisted of the steel rim plus the long bold to hold it in place, jack, brace and towing eye which were in the polystyrene block which fits under the wheel. It didnt come with a tyre and the dealer advised it would be cheaper for me to get one fitted rather than them doing it and then charging me. It cost £95+VAT for the kit. The size is 175/64 R14 and is a standard piece of kit across the Fiesta range regardless of the size of the wheels actually fitted (ours are 205/45 ZR17. I dont think its classed as a space saver but a full size tyre. Its still recommended to limit use and speed though. Our Fiesta had the bass speaker in the spare wheel well and the tyre inflation kit. Much rather have something useful in there 😀. My wife (its her car) says she can feel the weight difference so its probably costing a bit more in fuel cost but still a better option in my opinion. anon Posted June 11, 2021 Share Posted June 11, 2021 It is also a good idea (but a nuisance) to put the spare on a rear wheel which may entail changing two wheels in the event of a puncture. Running two different rolling radii on the front axle makes the traction control agitated so you should turn it off but it is also no good for the diff bearings so it should be avoided. It doesn't on mine. You need a scissor type to go under the sills. All Fiestas from at leat Mk6 come with the same spare wheel. This is a 14 inch wheel with wider 175/65 14 tyre. I acquired the spare and jack from my brothers 2006 MK6, the wheel fits but I can't get the his Jack under the sills of my ST-line. It might have lower (Sporty) sills than your Titanium model. Marky146 Posted June 13, 2021 Share Posted June 13, 2021 We forget the problem with a lot of these eBay buys is you get the wheel, tyre and a jack but not anyway to put them securely in the car! Found out the hard way myself, and frankly I should have known better! The Genuine Ford option sounds like excellent value. Even a 14" is fine. cjay1 Posted June 13, 2021 Share Posted June 13, 2021 On my car the complete spare wheel kit including tyre was a £100 option which is less than the standard recovery cost of an undriveable car due to flat tyre but I also have a inflation can as it's easier to use than changing a wheel. this way regardless of a small puncher or a destroyed tyre I can fix it at the roadside and stay mobile.
