Well, unfortunately it seems it may be the last couple of weeks that I'll be a Ford owner for the time being. Sob.

The car is up for sale, I've had a potential buyer. So I've had a bit of time to reflect on what to get next.

Here's the snag, I'm not upgrading, as it goes.

I've decided to buy either a future classic ... Or a classic car. Needs to save me money in some way or another and be a bit of a project (which will be used as an everyday car). I've narrowed it down to 4 cars now.

Future classics:

- Peugeot 309. Anything but the 1.1. Had a 1.9D one of these and very much miss it.

- Peugeot 205. Probably the 1.4.

- Citroen BX. 1.6 or 1.9 diesel.

ORRRRR.

Classic, veryyyy classic.

- A Land Rover Series IIA or III. Needs to be tax exempt. Some usable ones going for cheap but wont be in a few years time. 2.0 diesels do about 25mpg though, BUT unbelievably they are peanuts to insure. Even for me.

Bit of a dilemma. Anybody would like to point me in the best direction.

PS. I know anything could go wrong with all 3 of these cars. But whatever one I'll get they'll be a sort of a rolling restoration project.

If it were me, I'd go for the old landy :) Just personal preference really... I don't like pugs and the BX is just mental! Is that the one with a vertical radio and indicator switches like bike ones, instead of stalks....oh, and also the landy is awesome!

Escort XR3i would be amazing. But I don't think the lads at the insurance company would agree.

No that's the CX you're thinking of, that was insane. The BX was the baby CX really, then replaced it. There was two versions of the BX, the early rare ones like the one my Dad used to have and a toned down face-lifted version. The early BX though had the indicators (without self cancel), the horn, the light switches and the wiper switches sat on top of the dashboard, it had a one spoke steering wheel. The maddest thing about it and was by far my favourite feature apart from the suspension system was the cylindrical speedometer, which span around when the car sped up. This is the best picture I found, identical to the original "mad BX":

I'm favouriting the Land Rover. Cheap to insure, simple as a clock, and can hold up to 12 people with a LWB. :o

Hmmmm.....

My dad used to have a BX many, many moons ago. G reg i think it was in white. Nice car apparently!

I don't know, to find a Landy in decent condition that will actually last you would probably be easier said than done

Personally i would go for a 309 or 205. We've had this conversation before!!!

I knew you'd say that Mike. :P

I know what you're saying about the Landy though. If I can't I'd love a 309 but they are very hard to come by now, especially a good one.

I can see it being a 205 in the end to be honest.

Well if you enjoy ‘fixing’ motors go for the ‘Landy’ as a member of the ‘bonnet up club’ you’ll never to short of something to do :) . But if you’re looking for reliable (ish) transport that will take you more the 50 miles without breaking down I’m not sure I would go for a the Landrover, lovely though they are B)

Hey Luke, long time no... internet speak. Gotta be a Landy or 205 1.9 GTI - they're the classics off the list! Not really a fan of the 309 or of old Citroens in general, although that LCD dash does look cool - and probably was for the 10 minutes when it all worked! :D

Yeah that speedo was not reliable. Did you know it's possible for a B reg Citroen BX to go at 140mph through a McDonalds drive through? Now you do! :P
