DaddyAlan139
I have a 1989 Ford Escort 1.6Ghia. How will I cope when I cannot get E5 fuel. I use this car daily for my commute, and a second 1.6 ghia as a doner car.
Eric Bloodaxe
Hi Alan, You should still be able to find it, but may have to fork out for 97/98 octane. Have a look at the Government advice here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/e10-petrol-explained
driverPhil
You (or they) are worrying me now. I didn't see a description of the difference between E5 and E10 fuel on that website. IIRC when they stopped doing proper 4* petrol we had to buy a bottle of "octane booster" to squirt in the tank before filling up with unleaded fuel. That took me back to the days when I rode a BSA Bantam and had to put 2-stroke engine oil in the tank before filling up. So what's the problem with this new fuel? Pre-ignition due to low octane rating? Burning of valve seats due to insufficient lubrication? What else?
Eric Bloodaxe
Well, E10 has twice the amount of ethanol as E5!😃 Seriously, bit more info here on possible issues with E10. First one is a US site but still of interest. http://www.fuel-testers.com/ethanol_fuel_disadvantages.html#:~:text=E10 Ethanol Fuel Disadvantages%3A Cost%2C Engine Problems and, fuels can absorb enough moisture to phase separate. https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/advice/emissions/what-is-e10-fuel-and-how-could-it-affect-you/ You might be better following the E10 discussion here: https://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/128274-e10-fuel/
Paulkp
I'm under the (false?) impression that "Super" will remain E5, but that does cost more. As E10 may result in increased fuel consumption, the Super might be cost effective. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/e10-petrol-explained The Gov.uk page has a compatability checker, but only goes back to 1992 for Fords

The Government checker says Fords sold 1992 on (with the one exception) are cleared for use of E10. I would interpret that as meaning anything sold prior to that should NOT use it. Ford E10 is cleared for use in all petrol driven Ford models sold in Europe since 1992 excluding: Ford Mondeo 1.8 SCI from 2003 to 2007. Personal imports not approved by Ford of Europe are not included in the above statement.
