driverPhil
Please allow me to introduce myself ... I've had various Fords throughout my driving life and have always considered them to be very well behaved vehicles on the road. ATM I have had my present vehicle (1997 Escort Cabaret) for about 18 months, it is due an MoT and - no disrespect to it - it isn't the kind of wagon I really want, I just bought it 'cos it was cheap at a time when I needed a wagon quick. I'm toying with the idea of replacing it with a Transit Connect (I'm rather sorry they stopped making Escort vans - I had one for about 10 years it was boringly reliable and did everything I asked it to), and depending on the cost of getting it through its next MoT I might try to px it BUT ... I've been told it's a collector's car so although it is rather scruffy with a very sloppy clutch it has a good engine & gearbox and the inside is clean & tidy I thought it worth asking here if there's anyone who might take an interest in it. driverPhil
Worth saving from the scrap heap? Maybe ... I'm not up for trying to make a fortune out of it, only what it's worth, which tbh is (not a lot) * (some value as a collector's car). BTW it passed the MoT "by the skin of its teeth" this morning. Hence it is - for a while - street legal
driverPhil
Mr Dealer wouldn't let me px it. Can't blame him, it's a bit scruffy. I'd prefer not to scrap it but I will if I have to. Does anyone want to make me an offer for it?
driverPhil
BTW I've bought a SWB Transit Connect
driverPhil
Those cute little meerkats appear not to have a phone number or an email address where you can ask questions. I have some, below. Can anyone advise? I have a car which I intend to get rid of (see above). I'm buying a van. I expect that I will be owning and using both in parallel for a week or two until I dispose of the car. Am I right in thinking that I can't use the car's NCD when setting up the van's insurance? Will I be able to reduce the van's insurance by transferring the car's NCD to the van after I sell the car? They want me to estimate the number of "business" miles. Well, since the insurance has to cover me for personal AND ordinary driving-to-work usage I can estimate that, but then they are asking about "the company that owns the van". There isn't one. I own it (or will do). How does that work?
TomsFocus
It'll be much easier to swap your insurance from the car onto the van on one single day without starting a new policy. Using both for a couple of weeks is far more hassle & cost than you'd expect. You may find your current insurer will allow you to cover a second car for a week at additional cost if you phone and ask - Admiral group used to do this but I don't know if they still do, or indeed if others do. You can also temp insure the car for individual trips (if you can keep it off-road when at home in between). I've used the Cuvva mobile app to do this a few times, not cheap but sometimes the only option. I'm not sure why you're being forced to add info about a company owning the van...possibly ticked that it's leased rather than bought by accident? driverPhil
current insurers seem unable or unwilling to xfer insurance from car to small van although I'm sure @TomsFocus is right It could be the cheapest option
unofix
Hi Phil, I would have to say Tom is right. Swap the insurance from the car to the van now. I mean no disrespect but your car is worth less than £150, you would get more selling it as spares. Since you now have a van which I guess is worth more than the car then you need it insured, you have picked a bad time of the month to do this as you will have to tax the van from the day you became the owner so you are going to loose nearly 3 weeks road tax. Now I expect like magic a man called "Dan" will pop-up like a Genie out of a bottle to offer not too much help with your insurance quiestions. isetta
Having worked for many insurance companies I can say that many insurance companies do have problems coping with cars to vans as cars are on ‘personal lines’ policies and vans are on ‘commercial’ policies. I found it embarrassing telling people it wasn’t as easy as it ought to be. Customers get frustrated at insurance company rules. Staff do to. It's about time these insurance companies got used to the idea that private individuals keep a van - for personal use and also just because they like them. I know someone in the latter category but he doesn't have an email address so its not so easy to find out who he gets his insurance from.
