ODB2 scanners best suited for an escort

Tried a few ODB2 scanners for my Volvo and they were all useless. Didn't get any reading appart from some real time stats, which my odometer and other panels already showed. Only got some real results when I had to spend some £100+ on a specific, only volvo scanner.

Hoping to not make the same mistake twice, what does Ford use? Specifically for a 98 escort, will any scanner even from Halfords work or does Ford also need a specific scanner suited for their cars like a Volvo?

Just in time sale! Got myself an OBD2 scanner while browsing through Aldi. Good value stuff.

Having tried the scanner and however it sadly did not work on my Ford. Had the ignition in the correct position but still nothing. Looking online it's a general issue with the car and not scanner. Funny that I have to diagnose and fix the car to be able to do a diagnosis and find out what's wrong 🥴

Also scanner is fine because I tested it on my Volvo. It works with all its features, just is unable to scan it of course cause Volvo being Volvo, they need their own custom software for things everyone else agrees to do normaly...

Your Escort is OBD1 while your code reader is OBD2 these are not compatible.

The standardized EOBD regulation (European implementation of OBD2) became mandatory for existing models at January 2001 for Petrol engines and January 2004 for Diesel engines. For newly introduced models the regulations applied 1 Year earlier.

Before EOBD became mandatory car manufacturers were completely free to choose the diagnostic connection and protocol. Some used standardized OBD1 or OBD2 while others used their own (manufacturer specific) connector and protocol.

That's true. Having a look online only 2001 petrol cars and onwards reqiure an OBD2 port. I just assumed that it's a requirement in the US since 1996, Ford is from the US and mine is a '98 model, I was safe.

Does this mean I'm out of luck as I don't see any OBD1 scannerers. Just OBD2/EOBD and some old school scanner for Ford from the 80's to 90's.

Years ago before I had a obd2 code reader I had a problem with my 98 escort 1.6 petrol. The garage used a snap on reader but he had problems because he said my obd socket was not supplying any power to the reader. He had to connect some leads to my car battery to power the reader. I do not know if that was a problem with just my car or if all escorts had no power pins in the socket.
