Did this problem with the fuel gauge and the mileage trip meter happen at the exact same time ? If the answer is yes then I would say it's the well know solder joint problem. Disconnect the plug from the fuel tank sender unit and see if the gauge goes to zero. If the answer is yes then you have a faulty sender unit in the tank.
