2017 Ranger Wildtrak Sidelight fuse location

Featured Replies

Title says it, really.

Can't find the location of the fuse for the sidelights.

I've fitted some auxilary lights with integrated position lights and I need to find a feed to run to the low voltage side of the relay.

There aren't any fuses for the sidelights (parking lights). They are controlled by the BCM.

Balls. That would be why, then.

Is there another option?

Can you explain a little more what it is you are needing to do ?

Are you wanting to control the relay coil from the parking light circuit ?

These lights are a pair of Triple-R 750 from Lazerlamp (https://www.lazerlamps.com/triple-r-750.html).

They are designed to come on with the main beam but they have a marker light that should come on with the sidelights. They have a single signal wire that should connect to the sidelights for this purpose but I wanted to avoid interferring with the plugs at the back of the headlights so I thought I would use a fuse tap to the sidelight fuse.

You've informed me that there isn't a distinct fuse for the sidelights so now I'm wondering what to do. Maybe I could find another fuse that would be suitable such as the fuse for the dip beam if there is one.

My knowledge is way out of date as the last time I did any vehicle electrics was nearly 20 years ago before canbus was a thing on vehicles so I want to avoid inteferring with that.

I appreciate your help.

Sorry to have to tell you but the dip beam is also controlled by the Body Control Module (BCM) and therefore also has no fuse.

Much as many people seem to dislike them, I would in this case just use a ScotchLock connector. After all you are only making one connection per side so not a major wiring change.

Have you checked that your sidelights (parking lights) are on when the dipped beam is on ? Normally these days the only time  the sidelights (as you are used to calling them) come on is when the Automatic light switch is changed from auto to the parking light position, hence why they are now referred to as parking lights.

On a 2017 vehicle the options of what lights can be on when driving is now defined by law. During daylight hours and good visibility the Day Running Lights (DRL) should be on. There will be no sidelights (parking lights) on. At night the dipped beam headlights will automatically come on. Again there will be no sidelights on.

I understand.

I also need to update my vocabulary lol.

I am comfortable splitting the insulation and soldering so I could tap into the wire that goes to the dipped beam but to be honest, it seems like a risk for a couple of position lights. They're not the reason I bought these lights.

I think I'll just secure that wire out of the way and just use the lights connected to the main beam. I've read about people splicing into the wire for the dipped beam and the increase in drain can be enough to upset the BCM and them having to repeatedly take their vehicle to a main dealer to have it reset.

Any modifications I may make to this vehicle shouldn't compromise reliability. I plan on keeping it for a long time.

While I've got your attention, Do the dash lights have a fuse?

The T6 Ranger has a surprising lack of blank switches so I've bought a very nice switch facia that clips between the 12v sockets. This facia has a range of switches available but I need to find some way of tapping into the dash lights to provide power for the illumination of these switches. If that's not possible, maybe I could tap into something that comes on when the ignition is on as I believe the dash lights are always on with the ignition.

Is this something you can advise on?

Oh dear, you don't have much luck !

Instrument Cluster lights are controlled by the BCM ---- No Fuse !

Leave that with me while I have a think 🤔

There will be at least one fuse that will be active only when the ignition is on, I'll see what I can find.

Hello Rob,

You can try fuse 85 (7.5Amp) in the passenger compartment fuesbox.

It should switch on and off with the ignition as far as I can tell.

Good man.

That was the fuse I was looking at as an option if I couldn't find a discreet fuse for the dash lights.

I'll tap into that and see how I get on.

I'll let you know, if you're interested. I'm sure someone will find this thread useful. Auxilary lights are pretty popular on this type of vehicle.

You've been a great help. Much appreciated.

Good luck.

Keep us updated please.

Just as an extra bit of info, you could just add a relay to the dipped beam circuit (the coil of the relay only draws mA) and then use the relay to power the position marker lamps.
