Myles Hannon
Hi All, I have just taken ownership of my grandfathers 1981 Ford Escort Mk3 1981. I am trying to deduce what colour it is. The log book just said gold. The code in the Engine Bay is H1, but I can’t seem to locate what that represents. It looks like Solar Gold, but can anyone help me out? Thanks, Myles
isetta
Don’t know the answer, sorry. I like the mk3 escort. Had a few of them. It was a major step forward over the mk2 in terms of a nippy , easy to drive hatchback. And yours is mot and tax exempt so that’s a bonus. But you need to make sure you check for rusty brake pipes and perished brake hoses and tyres. Annoyingly Ford we’re a bit slow bringing out the 5 speed box, I assume yours is 4 speed . It looks like I’m decent condition in the pic
Myles Hannon
It’s been regularly serviced and garaged all its life, so very solid and no issues at present. I drove it 300 miles over from Ireland a couple of weeks ago, the 4 speed box didn’t miss a beat. Trying to address some minor bodywork issues, hence the colour code, but I’m going to keep it as original as possible. DaveT70
isetta
From my ownership and that of friends with mk3 escorts these are some of the things which were common problems. Rear light problems where the plug on the bulb holder plate suffers from severe corrosion. The metal plate under the battery corrodes away so the battery is hard to secure and rain goes into car under the battery. Starter motor wires very exposed to weather and the thin actuator wire spade connector corrodes or just comes disconnected so the starter motor does not activate. Electronic ignition module fails, I think there are two types, iirc the early Lucas one is fixed to side of distributor so it gets all the engine heat and fails. Yours might already have been replaced decades ago. I see your chrome hub caps are missing. I had a set that I sold on eBay a few years ago. I had a very nice x reg 1.6ghia mk3 that was written off when a motorcycle went straight into side of it in a car park, his fault. So it went to the scrapyard about 22 years ago. I took loads of bits off. Still have the bonnet and windscreen in my shed. Just in case I need them- seems unlikely now.
unofix
If you let us know the VIN number we can check it on the Ford ETIS system.

Ordered quite a few in that colour for users on our lease car scheme but as it's 40 years ago now the memory might be creaking a bit! Halfords Solar Gold does mention paint code H, so that might well be it: https://www.halfords.com/motoring/paints-and-body-repair/car-spray-paints/halfords-ford-solar-gold-car-spray-paint-300ml-453126.html TomsFocus
DaveT70
Colour code is on the body plate, not the VIN plate unofix

Myles Hannon
Thanks everyone. I think it is Solar Gold as per the plate under the bonnet. DaveT70
