Hi Revs Loss Of Power

started getting loss of acceleration today. the revs build up but its just so sluggish getting it up to speed and i can feel vibrations like going over a sutle little rumble strip.

revs get to 3k just as im getting to 20mph!

from what i gather my clutch is on its way out, but is it possible it could be anything else ?

i would say the clutch is worn.

noticed something strange just a little while ago coming back from a friends, its been raining in glasgow for days, car was all fogged up and damp so put on the front heated window to get rid of it and noticed it was even harder than usual to pull away from the lights so parked the car up and tested pulling away running the front and rear heated window with heaters on full.

pulling away in 1st gear its so weak that it almost stalls and cant get up past 10mph without some serious effort revs are low as well

when i say high revs i mean i need to get high revs through 1st and 2nd to beable to get it up to 30, i read elsewhere that in 4th gear and putting the foot down would be a good indicator of a worn clutch if the revs go high and the speed doesnt.

when i tried this both revs and speed rised steadily together but a hell of a slow

still reckon its the clutch ?

Doesn't sound like it. Looks like you're suffering a serious loss of power. The vibration could be a misfire.

with the added info it may not be the clutch, does the engine rev with the car in neutral? any missfire or noises? if its missfireing could be plugs, leads or coilpack playing up.

yeah it revs in nutral but rough (read on)

no misfires as far as i can tell then again i coudlnt tell as ive never experienced a misfire but there is vibrations from 1k to 2k revs in nutral then smoothes out a little after 2k revs

also feel vibrations when driving but that smoothes out once you get past 35mph

just checked my spark plugs all were normal, exactly like this like this:

champ1.jpg

and heres the but;

2 were normal with miniscule amounts of carbon around the top of the spark plug body at the electrode end.

1 of the spark plugs insulator at the terminal end had cracked so i replaced this spark plug

1 was normal but looked slightly wet looking and dirtier than the others (couldnt replace never had £3)

with replacing the cracked one theres been no difference im still getting the same problem

ill replace the wet lookin one

noted another symptom to add to the list.

there are tiny juders every so often when accelerating, nothing major just little ones they are hardly noticable.

im going to get a full set tomorrow when i get paid and just be done with the lot as im not happy with the way the last spark plug looked.

are there any ways to check if its the coil pack or wires without having to replace them to see if its the culprit ?

could be the cat packed up had the same on a escort few years back

Could be the Alternator going bad. And the battery sending less power to the fuel pump as the battery gets low on power when too many electrical accessories are switched on.

wait till its cold then give it a good shake should be no sound if ok .but if it rattles then its broke up in side

happen to me i was lucky to get over 35mph out of it hope this helps

im thinking its the coil pack/leads or plugs at fault here,

a slight judder occasionally when driving is a sure sign of a missfire.

i would recommend you replace all 4 plugs at a time. the slightly wet plug might also indicate this is the cylinder with the missifre...

most common cause of this is coil pack failure but bad leads or plugs can cause a coil pack to fail... but its not limited to these. a bad alternator or battery have also been known to damage coil packs (been there myself also)

i reckon its now a misfire for sure, heard popping from the engine when accelerating .

how would i test the coil pack and leads totry and find which is the problem, money is tight right now id rather buy the coil pack at around £50 if i knew it was that rather than pay £25 for leads then not beable to buy the coil pack till next week :(

was just checking the ht leads and with the engine running i pushed down on top of the lead that goes in to the coil pack, first two went ok then one of them i got a mild shock from one of them but cant remember as the shock went through the finger that wasnt pushing down on the lead i was pushing down on?. is this normal? i assumed all the rubber would be insulating you from getting a shock.

also engine management light started flashing now

just changed ht leads and put full set of new spark plugs in and nothing has changed except the engine management light has stoped flashing

coil pack next then

sounds like a coil pack to me, a simple test you can do is remove it from the car and check for any cracking. if its cracked even slightly replace it. if its not it doesnt mean its fine.

after no change with the new leads and plugs i went to the new garage that fixed the bearings in my gear box or clutch, i cant remember but anyway suprisingly he was open on a saturday and being a decent guy that he is i quized him and he tested elads and plugs checking for arc'ing etc etc FREE OF CHARGE, he managed to call up his supplier and get me a cheapish coil pack at trade price for £19, knowing i wouldnt get this price next week and having enough money i went for it. fitted it myself at the garage and the car is now running fine.

thanks everyone for your input, it wont go unrecognised

if its not a genuine motorcraft coil pack you may find it doesnt last very long sometimes they only last a few months for a genuine ford coil pack try these guys best prices around and never had any issues with them failing http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/COIL-PACK-IGNITION-Focus-Mondeo-fiesta-OE-FORD-not-COPY_W0QQitemZ390059606434QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item5ad15d41a2

yeah it aint motorcraft, which is what i wanted but was getting desperate, needed a working car pronto as i need it to work and get around. genuine ford coil was £55 from both motor factors within easy distance.

ill get that genuine one you mentioned, a bargain for sure as thats near enough the going rate for a lower quality one, thanks

we used to use them at my old work as they say due to the deal ford have the motorcraft logo has to be removed i have one on my car even the ford parts guy admitted it was one of theres lol makes a change they usually deny it like i said irf it starts misfiring again its lkikely the coil the cheaper ones are a hit or miss you get some last a fair bit and others just fail constantly
