What is this grommet for on a mk 5 Escort

Hi ive noticed in both my driver and passenger side footwells on my mk 5 Escort theres a clear oval shaped grommet like plastic piece stuck to the floor. Ive never seen one of these before and just wasnt sure if it is a grommet or something else. Has anyone else noticed one of these before? Thanks.
