RobLeeds
Hi I’m fitting a kill switch to my mk4, back in the day a mechanic friend of mine used to recommend taking it from one of the wires feeding the coil and running wire to a hidden location in the car, I’ve heard of fuel pump or battery ones too. Has anybody fit one to their classic and which did you go for? Just interested in other takes on it, Rob
Paulkp
Cars that have electric fuel pumps tend to be fitted with a "Shock Detection" switch that cut off the supply to the fuel pump. Or are you thinking of a theft deterrent type switch hidden away somewhere ?
TomsFocus
My personal preference would be a clear visual deterrent on a retro/classic car. Any damage done to gain entry is likely to be expensive with parts being less common now. Big yellow Disklok or similar.

Or better still a big Chrome Disklok, but they are rare and not even photos of them exist.... or do they ?? @StephenFord might know 🤔

RobLeeds
Yes I was meaning a hidden switch somewhere as extra protection, I have a disclock already, but not chrome I’m afraid 🙂
Paulkp
So if KE - Jetronic, the fuel pump is an obvious choice. If the Fuel pump is fed by a relay or unique fuse then you could break the RELAY (not ign) coil supply, or the actual supply. I'd have a good look at both the schematic, and how you can physically embody it. The best place to hide a switch, might be in full view. Quite easy to do as you can just splice it in under your steering wheel! I had hidden the switch under the leather on my gear stick, no one looks there!!!! DaveT70
Take the main HT lead off from the coil, when you park it. Unless they carry one around with them, it's not going anywhere
Wino
IIRC did someone on here ( @unofix) fit a kill switch relating to the fuel supply which could be activated by their mobile phone ?
unofix
Yes, kind of 🤔 I have a tracker fitted on my car which has a remotely operated output. So I've wired the output to a relay that cuts the electrical supply to the fuel pump. I can activate the tracker output from either my phone or using a computer via the tracker website. The only thing is on my diesel for some reason with the fuel pump supply off the car still manages to run and can get nearly up to 20 mph but that's as fast as it will go. On the rest of the family vehicles, some diesel and some petrol I've managed to kill them stone dead, but not my own 🙄

unofix
Just now, Wino said: why it won't cut the fuel supply off completely ? no idea, it just seems as if the engine is able to pull enough fuel through with out the pump !! Still, given the maximum speed it will do is 20mph it is probably enough for them to just abandon it, or it would be a very slow police chase 🤣
Paulkp
Not that I know about such things, but these days, stolen cars are just moved to a nearby out of sight position, just in case they do have a tracker, then collected later ?
RobLeeds
Thanks for the replies everyone, sounds like the fuel pump is most people’s favourite, I’ve not looked into a tracker, may do.back in the eighties I had a few mk3s and always had a hidden switch taken from the coil, il look into some of the suggestions on here.

I wouldn't be bothered with a tracker tbh as Ford Pass locates the car as it stands. Also an old mobile phone can be placed in the car with its location switched on as a secondary device. You could also add an apple tag to that list as alternatives.

Well I never knew they had that back in the days of 1989 Escorts 🤣 An apple airtag might be an easy option 👍

Ian Keys
Hi what you need to do is find a wire that runs down the drivers side of the car which goes from the fuse box to the fuel pump. This is usually a black wire that goes under the carpet close to the sill. When your 100% certain youve found that wire cut it under the carpet and put each end of that wire into a switch that has on or off and by switching this off your fuel pump wont run and nobody can start the car. Just switch it on when you use the car. You could locate the switch close to the backseat under the carpet snd even have a small slit to get to it when you want. Good luck.

DaveT70
Why are we all talking about fuel pumps on a MK4 1.6 Ghia? It's got a carb??? Pull the HT lead off or take the rotor arm out of the dizzy cap
TomsFocus
Having to lift the bonnet every time you lock or unlock would be annoying tbh. It's also likely to snap the bonnet cable eventually as they won't be designed for so much use.
DaveT70
Maybe, but you can't fit a kill switch on a mechanical fuel pump
