Gear Box

We bought my husbands car 67 plate for John Gross Ford dealer, it had done around 7000 miles and only done 20000 as of now, it started making a whirring noise, took it to our local garage who thought it could be the wheel bearings, though they said unlikely due to low mileage, however it has come to light that the Gear Box looks like it has never had any oil in it at all, no oil residue, no leaks etc. The garage took photos before filling with oil, but the bearings are damaged and need replacing.

Has anyone else had problems like this?

I've never heard of a totally empty gearbox from new on any car.  There is always the chance of human error during the factory build but I'd be surprised that it lasted 20,000 miles if that really is true.

I'm afraid I'd be rejecting that  car unless they put a new transmission in

TBF i had a durashift fusion that drank gearbox oil for *hits and giggles, multiple garages could find where it went, no leaks anywhere, i passed it on to some other mug via a PX. Did i feel guilty ....... nope.

I agree with you, I'd be totally amazed if the gearbox would last 20,000 miles with never having any oil in it.

Example - Sister's Astra, clonking from front end, bush on front suspension suggested by my brother and I.  Car went into a Vauxhall main dealer for inspection, new gearbox fitted.....  Clonk still there.  Second visit, bush replaced,   New replacement gearbox then failed some months later, as it had not been filled with oil correctly on installation....
