Puma ST 1.0 mhev powershift

When I first saw a rumour of an ecoboost hybrid Puma ST, I kind of imagined the hybrid system boosting the power/torque on the 1.5, to perhaps give a bit of the kudos of the WRC car.

I didn't really envisage a slightly warmed up 1.0 MHEV ecoboost with auto. Should they be calling it an ST?

It's mentioned in the "News" section of this site but press release here:

Just further diluting the ST naming imo.

Not that it makes much difference. There will be no hot hatches soon. Only warm SUVs and crossovers from Ford.

Sadly, yes.

I see they're unveiling their new VW based EV SUV on the 21st of this month. I'm beside myself with excitement!😃

Only for the next 4 or 5 years then you can enjoy all the legal company ads asking if you’ve been missold your EV.

Tbf, it does have 170bhp!

Remember when that was enough for a Focus ST?  And it needed a heavy 2.0 engine doing 30mpg for that...

Unless I'm mistaken or have misread a number of internet articles, surely the really surprising news here is that Ford are resurrecting the Powershift gearbox. Google (and loads of posts on this forum) says that it was troublesome, led to law-suits in various countries and hasn't been used for 6 years.

(Yes, I know it's not exactly the same gearbox, but it must have a similar principle of operation).

It’s still only doing 30 mpg 😛

That Puma probably weighs about 500kg more than the mk1 focus though.

Yeah, I know it's not a direct comparison.  Definitely seems like progress though.

Would also be interested to know whether the turbo & genny give the 1.0 Puma much more torque than the NA ST170...

I was wondering that, but from what I've seen so far they're fairly close around 1280kg. I guess you need to go back a bit further to the days of sub-tonne weights.

Focus was about 144lb/ft, this Puma is 248Nm or about 182 lb/ft.

It looks more like they're resurrecting the Powershift label for dual clutch boxes. The existing 125 and 155 MHEV Pumas already have a 7 speed dual clutch box (which has hopefully been improved over previous versions). I assume this version will get the same thing.

That should help it along a bit then!

Must admit I didn't realise the Mk1 Focus was so heavy either.

No, I would have sworn it was lighter than that.  Did a good search around and lightest figure I could find for the ST 170 was 1208kg for a 3 door.

I guess you need to go back a good while further for significantly lighter cars. I remember magazine comparison tests in the mid to late 80s which included stuff like the Golf GTi, Astra GTE, Peugeot 309 Gti, Escort XR3i,  which were all in the low-mid 900s kg. The MG Maestro was a bit of a bloater for the time at around 980kg.

Going off the topic somewhat, but I still reckon cars from that era "felt" quicker, despite the huge increases in power since. Might be the weight, possibly the much lower overall gearing, perhaps the lack of driving aids like ESP, ABS, etc leading to a greater fear of ending up in a hedge!😃

It's not DCT250 or even DCT450 it's a unit bought in from Renault/Nissan group

Previous discussion on the 7 speed DCT suggests several manufacturers are using the same Magna box.

Aha, so they've merely resurrected the name.  Thanks for the explanation.

Still seems a strange thing to do. A bit like if Ernest Jones/H Samuel were to rebrand their shops as "Ratners".

Have to admit I contacted my local Ford dealer to express an interest in the Puma ST Powershift. There seems to be hardly any definite information available on the car and its pricing. My dealers response was I’ll get back to you in a couple of months, so I’m guessing more details and availability from early summer.

The puma itself is a resurrected name.

As was Capri, having been used on the coupe version of the Consul Classic long before the ones most of us remember.

Ford are obviously good at this resurrection business, I'll put my name down for a few years time and see if they can bring me back!😃

From the way we've all gone off at a tangent, I thought no-one was interested in Ford's latest offering.

Shame the dealers don't know anything. I was curious as to how they will price it, but couldn't find any info on the website either!
