Clutch Stuck Down

Hi All

After driving to Norwich to pick son up from university, my clutch pedal suddenly got stuck on the floor, would not return (could not move pedal, even by hand).

As such, I was unable to put into or change gear. Luckily enough I had just pulled into a car park, not on main road.

My son and myself managed to push car into parking space (bit hard when just 2 pushing car up slight incline).

Was about to do phone calll to use roadside assist (that I get free with a service), but thought I will try to pull pedal up again, little bit stiff to pull up, this time pedal came up.

Tried changing gear a few times and drove round car park to check, seemed strangely ok.

So decided to take a chance for a 125 mile drive home, being wary of the clutch all the way, but luckily enough clutch behaved itself.

Am in process of looking further into what could have caused clutch pedal to stick on floor in first place. If I find out more will follow on with another post.

Hi All

Just over a week later and clutch behaving itself.

After I googled the problem (as I imagine a few of you have) I found that this problem has affected a fair few other ford owners.

Throughout the ford range mainly as in, St, Rs, Fiesta, Escort, Etc. Owners. And some posts from America as well. But also a couple of reports from other makes as well.

My clutch is hydraulically operated, not cable.

The clutch (in my case) shares the master brake cylinder, and is kept topped up by the same resevoir as well.

Some of the reports that I read said about faulty master cyclinders that were fairly expensive to repair, going by Oem parts prices.

Whilst some reports talked about dodgy slave cylinders where the seals had gone, or just failed completely.

And some reports said that they had only had the problem once and it had not re-occurred.

I checked the obvious, as in resevoir fluid level ok, and not too low (was just touching maximum line, so ok).

Over the easter break (provided the weather stays dry) I plan to get under my car to check for signs of leakage from the slave cylinder or associated pipework.

Will follow on with post if I find out any more.

Hi All

So after about 2 weeks from intitial occurrence of my clutch stuck down fault.

And whilst dry over easter, after getting under car but was not being able to see much, no signs of fresh fluid leaks, etc.

And with finding limited info on internet as regards diagrams etc, but most importantly, as it has now got stuck down a total of 4 times.

I have decided to bite the bullett, go to a garage and have a complete new clutch kit fitted.

The total cost to me is going to be just under £700.00 But I intend to pay this as I want my car to be reliable and trustworthy.

Just as a footnote to this post, the garage that I have booked at (as well as others I contacted) all said the job is about a whole days work.

Of which I can beleive from some of the comments that I read online.

Hi All

So the latest in my clutch saga is this.

The garage that I had it booked in with have told me their suppliers said my clutch no longer available.

Have been checking out quite a few online dealers, with internet search of "2016 Ford Edge Clutch Kit"

All say in stock until I put my reg in, when then say not for my car, even on ford motorcraft website!

So I beginning to experience problems that some others have had in their clutch woes.

Next step for me is car booked into local main dealers for a diognostic, etc check up.

Hopefully from this I will be able to get correct clutch kit part number/s for my car.

(Just wondering how long before my clutch totally gives up?).

All this on a car just over 7 years old with just over 53K miles.

Hi All

Latest news on clucth saga.

Dealership reported back to me "No fault found" after having my Edge for diagnostic checks etc over a 2 day period, which is mainly what I was sort of expecting with an intermittent fault.

Luckily for me there was no cost, even for courtesy car, due to this report.

So next step for me is to carry on with more internet searching.

And being continously cautious about clutch when driving (as well as normal driving awareness anyway).

Will post again if I find out any more.

Hi All 

Still no further joy with internet searches, and my clutch currently still behaving itself, though I am still cautious of it.

Have resorted to asking fmc customer care centre if they are aware of any clutch problems on various models throughout their range (as I am currently querying another subject with them).

Also mentioned my problems in actually locating clutch kit for my Edge through searching using my reg number. 

Will report back when I find out more.

Hi All

Latest on my clutch problems.

Still driving cautiously due to issue, but no more occurrances to date.

After few emails back and forth with Ford Customer service Centre, end result is that they are not aware of any clutch issues (I was half expecting this sort of reply anyway, but had to ask the question), but they continued by saying that if it happens again to then get in touch with them again.

On the subject of when sourcing clutch parts using my reg no. they suggested to go to my dealers (of which I had already done) before contacting them.

So my plan now is to just continue driving cautiuosly, whilst continuing internet searches, etc.

I have a fairly long journey coming up soon, so will see how it fares with this.

Hi All

Latest on clutch issues.

Still driving cautiuosly, not only due to clutch issues.

But also due to 1d1ots who just can't see me driving down the road in broad daylight.

And that is with my Drl on (as they always are).

Anyway, long journey now done and still clutch behaved itself.

But nonetheless I am not ready to drop my guard yet.

As will still take sometime before I consider clutch fault to be no longer present.

Due to working abroad I have not been to dealers yet re clucth prices/availability.

This is something that I plan to do in person, not over the phone, or web.

If/when I do find out anymore, I will post on here.
