(Guess no-one else watched it so no harm in spoilers now). The 306 episode did bring back a lot of memories for me... I know I'm late to the party, but just caught up with this show. Must confess that I wanted to slap the owner of this 306! All niggly faults, but why would someone ignore them? Faulty door mirror, leaking roof aerial, ripped driver seat & as stated, a rear light cluster like a goldfish bowl. All the faults obviously didn't happen simultaneously, and I just don't understand the mentality of not dealing with each one as and when they arise. Oh well, guess it's just my OCD that would never allow that to happen!
Jimpster
Not OCD, just the throw away mentality in society, if its broke leave it lol
TomsFocus
It's mostly the 'that'll do' mentality. My Dad had it for as long as I've known him. Sadly, I did not inherit it! Tbf, broken mirrors wouldn't bother me as they look fine, they can just be pushed into place and left. (I don't share a car so rarely need to adjust them). But an aerial dripping on me every time it rained would have to be sorted asap lol. Seat repair is expensive. 306s were only worth about a grand 10-15 years ago so it just wasn't worth the cost of professional upholstery repair. The bolsters on most of mine were scruffy, just had to accept that I didn't have to see them while I was sitting in them!

I wouldn't get the seat repaired because of labour cost, but you can easily pick up a decent £50 replacement. As for the aerial, I'm no mechanic, but I certainly could (& have!) removed it and executed a water tight seal. I have also executed a leak repair into my boot/lights. I guess it is OCD afterall 🤣 Oh, my mum suffers the ,'that'll do' mentality too LOL

Not for a GTi-6 you can't... I used to scrap the seats from the Meridian models (half leather, half cloth) because there were just so many about that people wouldn't travel to collect them. But the GTi-6 seats (half leather, half Alcantara) were pretty much impossible to buy used as they were rare to start with and wore so badly with even light use. You're still at the tail end of Mk2 parts being cheap and readily available while scrap yards are full of them... Give it a couple of years and I reckon parts will become harder to source out and prices will start rising because of that. When I look at the prices of 306 parts nowadays I must have thrown away the equivalent of hundreds of pounds in parts but that's the way it goes. Cars all go through the 'cheap' stage before they start to become rare and desirable again. I've owned most of my cars during that cheap stage!
TomsFocus
Started reminiscing about the good old days... Door handle snapped off, plate hanging off, rear plate lights intermittent...and then the exhaust fell off as well. It was getting scrapped within a matter of weeks so not worth fixing any of that... I did achieve a perfectionists mileage in it though! Also came across another couple of pictures of the GTi-6. Two very different cars, bought for very different reasons, completing very different purposes.

TomsFocus
Anyone seen the latest series of University Challenge? I like the new host, but not a fan of the new set. Must admit, the new set didn't bother me, but, I wanted the host, Amol, to operate the height leaver at the side of his chair to make him taller, he looked like a child in that big desk LOL
Jimpster
I test my knowledge by that show, how many starters and bonuses i get. Tho i do think the questions or how theyre asked has got easier, Bamber must be rolling in his grave.

TomsFocus
I can usually get a few of them. Though there'll be at least one question per show where I don't even understand the question, let alone knowing the answer! 1
mjt
Anyone seen the latest episode of the Repair Lot? I must say I was amused seing the guy turning up a new brake adjuster for the Bentley (fabulous car btw). When he was drilling the bar it was wobbling all over the place. That lathe must have seen better days. The following shot of the drill chuck rotating merrily in the headstock was laughable. The arty-farty boneheads who make these programmes don't have a clue. And who takes a damaged photograph to a garage to have it restored?

I'm always taking faulty photos to my local KwikFit, they always do a grand job 🤣

And who takes a damaged photograph to a garage to have it restored? Not to mention filing the muck off of a single earth point being classed as a 'massive job'... I couldn't understand the photograph thing at all. The outsourcing could have been done by the customer without them getting involved. But then they damaged the photo anyway - fortunately on a blank part that could be easily glued back on. And then they appeared to stick it to another piece of glass afterwards!! I was at least expecting a nice frame and mount... The Princess section was annoying as well. Spent more time showing a syringe pulling oil off of the head than explaining why hardened valve seats are needed for use with unleaded fuel... Also wasn't sure whether to mention it on here but did anyone see the Escort estate repair? Plating the back of the hole and then wiping a massive wad of filler over the top really isn't the way to go about that repair. I can't imagine it'll last many boot slams without cracking.
mjt
It's all very well replacing a blown fuse but no questions about why it was blown. Faulty wiring? I agree with you, Tom. It annoys me that they always treat the viewing public as if they're as lacking in intelligence as them. Any good presenter couild give a simple, concise explanation of why the valve seatings need to be hardened to work with unleaded fuel, how the head is machined to accept the hardened seats and why this wasn't necessary with leaded petrol but instead we get a lot of waffle that doesn't really tell you much. Yes, I wasn't impressed with the tailgate repair either.

Feel it's more an 'entertainment' show with an end 'reveal', whose primary pitch was, "we can do something like the BBC Repair Shop, but make it about cars..."
TomsFocus
I think what frustrates me most with that program is that they missed the opportunity to challenge stereotypes. They could easily have shown that an old guy and a young blonde girl can be equally as competent as a middle aged man named Edd or Ant, but instead they seem to be reinforcing the stereotypes! I do agree though, that when we know how something 'should' be done, it's difficult to tolerate watching it done the wrong way. It's not even like some of things are personal preference, that Escort repair was wrong in todays world whichever way you look at it. Might have got away with tonnes of filler 30 years ago. Anyway, on a lighter note, I've been watching more films on TV lately as a bit of escapism... Watched 'We're The Millers' one evening last week and found it a good laugh! It is a bit rude/immature...but that's exactly what I needed tbh!
mjt
I understand what you're saying Stephen and yes, we know stuff, but I just think all these programmes are overly dumbed down for a general public who don't necessarily know this sort of stuff but might nevertheless find some technical detail interesting.

TomsFocus
Tried watching Gremlins (1984) last night. Thought it was going to be a gentle comedy about some cute little creatures. That turned out to be a mistake! 😮
