Electric window problem

Recommended Posts

Sorry if it’s been asked before.
I am currently having a problem with my drivers side electric window. It opens fine, but if opened all the way into the door, it won’t come back up.

If I open it partially, it’s fine, it closes without a problem, it’s just not possible if the window is fully open.

The only way I have managed to close it is to bang the inside of the door whilst holding the button up to close it. It then Slowly closes. The motor sounds like it’s struggling. I obviously don’t want to do this if I can help it as it has actually bruised my hand.

Is this a problem with the motor/regulator? I’m getting mixed suggestions as to what can be the problem, it’s either the motor needs replacing or It’s been suggested to me that the windows need resetting but I’m worried I’ll lower the window in the process of resetting the windows and it won’t come back up?

Anyone experienced this problem or have any suggestions? Thanks

Hi Fiona. Sorry to learn you've bruised your hand whilst banging the door to close the window.

Have you had the door trim panel off to see what's happening when the window is in the operation of going down? It sounds like the mechanism is catching on its lowest position and freed when banged on.

Yes resetting would be my first port of call and I understand your reluctance. But I suggest you take the door trim panel off and gently prise off the plastic sheet (stuck on with a putty type goo) and operate the window slowly and in increments and watch what happens whilst the window is opening. See what's making it stick on its lowest position. Maybe a squirting of grease in the runners might help.

i have had the door off recently. Took it off to see if the motor had two or six pins to purchase a new one. We had Given the motor and runners a good squirt of wd40 whilst able to get to it.
We didn’t really watch the window go down to be honest so may try that first. Reactant to buy a costly Motor, if it not that that’s the problem.

We wound the window down whilst the door was off, and as it has been, got stuck in the door. The only thing that brought it back up was tapping the motor whilst holding the button to close the window.

Thanks for your suggestions, once the hands not so bruised 🙈, will try a reset

Probably the "Up" limit switch is high resistance/grotty. So it will go down, but not up.  This might be part of the same assembly for the "Down" limit switch.

Probably buried within the motor (or if you are really unlucky, there might be an overcomplicated digital control involving the use of something as powerful as what we might have called a "supercomputer" in the days of the moon landings, but with poorly written software.).

If you have to have the door panels off to replace, clean the mechanism of any old grease, and smear some new clean grease on it.
