mk 8 fiesta ST Numberplate light

HI,

Struggling to find anything anywhere on the MK8 Fiesta ST Numberplate Lights.

Don't know if mine is aftermarket or even if there is any available for the Mk8 but one of my lights has started flickering(2 lights each side) and it seems like you have to change the complete unit as the camera is on the lens on one side.

Can't find anything anywhere on how to change or even where to buy the unit, no screw holes anywhere either.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Steph

I assume yours is the handle/camera/lights all in one unit.

The LED's are not a serviceable item 🙁 although I'm sure some electronic repair shops could probably fix them.

eBay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/144482956700

Hi mine is a 2019 car so different to this , does the same apply, would really appreciate a part number or any help, looked all over e bay , you tube etc

We can't access part numbers for Mk8's unfortunately.  If you contact Ford on eBay or your local Ford parts counter they should be able to provide you with the part number.

The numberplate lamps are not intended to be easily user serviceable as they are LED units.  You will have to work out how to gain the best access to change them yourself.  This is from the handbook:

License Plate Lamp
These lamps have LEDs.
Note:   We recommend that you have LEDs changed by an authorized dealer.

I've come to the conclusion that factory fit LEDs can be a bit of a con. Even my Beko fridge/freezer bought last year has an LED light in it. In the olden days you could replace a blown bulb for about a £1. Now, it's 'non serviceable', and a new unit costs £35 - that is simply a rip off...

It's because they're meant to last the life of the car (or appliance).  It's a good theory, and does work in lab conditions, but doesn't work in the real world sadly.

Car is only 4 years old so nowhere near the lifespan !

Tom, I have used LED Bulbs since they launched over 15 years ago. Often with some ridiculous claim of a 50,000 hour lifespan or more. From real life experience, I seem to replace them with just a little less frequency of old fashioned bulbs.

Things use to get better with time, but I often feel we are regressing in certain things...

a trip to the dealers then and it will cost an arm and a leg for them to fit !!

Just on a point of order do you know for sure that it is a factory fitted handle/camera ?

After market units look almost identical but the type of camera is different to the OEM unit. An easy way to tell is if the parking lines on the screen move when you turn the wheel then it is 99% certain that it is an original factory fit.

Not sure will look on my way home tonight , had the car since a year old so I would think factory fit , it looks like breaker yards are charging £150 for the handle/camera so it’s going to be fortune and no way round it

Except to remove the unit, and get an LED soldered in to replace faulty one as already suggested...

The camera handle can be prised out externally but not to be recommended if you are unfamiliar with the unit as the hole it slots into can easily be distorted with pry tools. Safer to remove from the inside but quite fiddly, tiny hands would be useful, all you're doing is depressing some spring slips, one on each side. Refitting is easy, just a push fit from the outside. I think the handle unit is sealed so if you do manage to break into it you will leave it unserviceable.

The parking lines on the screen don’t move on turning the steering wheel, does this mean I cannot now go to the main dealers for replacement as the camera won’t fit the wiring now, does the camera not remove from the handle unit at all ? I am lost what to do ??

I would still go to your dealer for a proper diagnosis, and if necessary, replacement. If it's not an 'original' fitment, at least you'll know where you stand.

If it's an aftermarket camera it's probably a "Motormax" one, Halfords sell these for £99 however there are plenty available on eBay circa £25. Motormax have their own website so it's quite easy to check model numbers etc. If it is aftermarket it really isn't difficult to swap out, just a bit fiddly.

Then it is not a factory fitted system. It may be the Motormax aftermarket system, but I suspect not. It is far more likely to be a DIY install using the handle and cameras found on eBay for around £25. I know, that's what I installed on my 2019 Focus 😉

So Stephanie you're female !!

I don't see why that should prevent you from fixing this yourself with some guidance from those of us here with hundreds of years of experience and know how.

The first thing you need to do is remove the existing unit so we can see exactly what you have. Are you game to give this a try ?

All you need is a couple of old credit cards and a small flat blade screwdriver. I'm happy to try and talk you through the process if you want to try.

Interestingly the camera linked on this thread looks identical to the factory one on my car

Yes it will be. The moulds used to produce the plastic, are shall we say copied by a country who doesn't understand the meaning of copyright © 😉

Even the camera looks like the real deal. The difference is in the video signal and the connectors that are used.

Genuine Ford camera uses a small square 4 pin plug and the copy camera uses an RCA connector for the video and two separate wires for the power.

I have found out what it is Motormax MM0716 ,sticker under the camera when I put my specs on !

on asking questions on e bay still not an easy swap out as apparently the connectors will be different and also  may need coding something to do with the numbers under MM0716 on the sticker mine says 20-10 , don’t quite understand as usual !
