Predator Mustang HID Lights

Featured Replies

I have a 2017 Wildtrack. I upgraded the headlights to the aftermarket Predator HID Mustang lights from 4x4at.com. When they were installed they cut the DAB radio signal, and I complained but the company said it was nothing to do with the lights. The garage disconnected the lights and the DAB radio then worked fine again. They are now coming upto 2 years old and have been great for driving. In the past month, the drivers side has started to flash/flicker when driving along and then the build goes out completely. Once the engine has been turned off and on again, the light works for a bit and then flashes before going out. I wondered if anyone else has had this problem.  4x4at.com won’t respond to emails, and I’m not sure how to rectify the light. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It would seem like a simple case of you need to replace the lamp. They sell them on their website but hurry they only have 3 left in stock !!!   https://www.4x4at.com/mustang-style-hid-replacement-bulbs-only-pair

I would also think the use of these HID lamps in the UK is illegal and very possibly an MOT failure if the tester spots them as aftermarket equipment.

Thanks, I’ll look at getting the replacement bulb.

The vehicle has passed the MOT the past two years. The lights have the projector that is flat topped and directed to the side of the road, and not just a round light pattern, which can be the case with the illegal projector in the UK

To be fair, I think they 'can' be legal as long as you have headlamp washers installed. Also, it may be the 'ballast' that is faulty, not the bulb. When I had HIDs installed, a new ballast often sorted out a flickering... (though it could be the bulb LOL)

HIDs are awfully easy to spot in an MOT as they take a second or 2 to warm up, whereas an 'illegal' LED is instantaneous.

Thought about getting a pair for my 2017 Wildtrack

Was the Dab issue constant all the time ?

I'm not so sure these days. The MOT rules are very fussy about vehicle headlights being changed to a different type from what it was built with. That said the ones the OP is referring to are not like factory fitted Bi-Xenon but are more just like a 'bulb' (lamp 🤣). Your absolutely right about the ballast being the usual cause of the problems, but looking at the kit the OP has I suspect they may be built in (or perhaps not).

Correct.  Fitting Xenons or LED's into a halogen cluster is an immediate fail in England, Scotland & Wales.  (NI rules are slightly different).  I suspect most testers either don't know or don't care as people still seem to be getting away with it.

Existing halogen headlamp units on vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1986 must not be converted to be used with high intensity discharge (HID) or light emitting diode (LED) bulbs. If such a conversion has been done, you must fail the headlamp for light source and lamp not compatible.
