mross
Hi I have a focus mk2 2.0 tdci on a 07 plate covered 26k, i have noticed reciently a hissing noise when accelerating, nothing very loud but noticable and was not there before, i can also hear it when i turn off the engine then after a few seconds or so it dies down and stops. Has anyone noticed this sort of thing before as i find myself homing in on it now and it bugging the hell out of me, any thoughts would be great. Thanks,
alz
it possible that you have got a leaking intercooler pipe. Alz
mross
Thanks Alan i will have a good root around at the weekend. Mark.
hawker
You have probably noticed its not as responsive during acceleration too. Definitely a split intercooler hose as alz said. Its a common problem on these engines.
mross
Now you come to mention it yeh it has been a little sluggish of late, nothing drastic but not as responsive i can only hear it when the engine is under load even just a little bit. If i rev it with the clutch dipped at stanstill i can hardly hear it, i dont suppose if you know which particular pipe is prone to this sort of fault or are they all as bad as each other. Thanks for the advice Guys. Mark.
hawker
I can only speak for my experience with the 1.6 TDCi, but the culprit was the main intercooler hose. Take off the engine cover, and it was the thickest hose that is connected to the intercooler and has a rubber concertina connection. The hose clip over this rubber cuts through due to engine vibration. Not a cheap hose to replace (£60+ for the part alone) but Ford obviously acknowledged the flaw in its design, and the new one is all hard plastic. mross
Ok i know the one, come rain or shine saturday its coming off first for a inspection. Looks like the trusty gaffa tape will be making an appearance as a short term fix im sure, Thanks for the good advice, one more thing just out of curiosity is it normal for turbo units to make a light whistle noise when on hard acceleration, i brought this up six months ago with ford and the workshop manager insisted its normal, but i have my doubts. hawker
light whistling is normal. a hissing/rasping isnt! and gaffa tape wont patch the split up at all. there is way too much pressure involved
mross
Well i have taken off all the associated pipes and thouroughly inspected them and found nothing they are all in good order and are clean with no sutty deposits around them, i know it sounds nuts but i was really hoping for a split somewhere regardless of the cost of a replacement pipe. After putting it all back together i then noticed something else, i could hear a hissing noise (same as before) even when at a standstill for the first time i had'nt even drove off and i just happened to put my foot on the break peddle and it disapered completely, i took my foot off again and it gradually built back up to a hissing noise. I have checked the vac pipe into the servo and it seems fine and its quite loud sitting in the drivers seat but cant hear it atall if i sit in the passenger seat so its defo on the drivers side, any ideas what to do next guys apart from take it to a garage. alz
with the info that you have given, and the things that you have checked, try the servo vacuum return valve, it the small one on the thin black pipe going to the servo, or the seals on the servo pipe. mross
Hi Alz Thanks for the reply, there is a thin black pipe going from the vac pump to the servo this has a valve in its path and i take it that its a one way valve, so i will take this off and suck it and try and blow down the pipe (excuse the expression i know what your thinking ha) to see if the valve is defective. I have never taken the vac pipe off at the servo before is it a case of just prising out the gromet as im a little concerned its attatched to something inside the can ?. There is another what seems to be a vac pipe attatched to the rear of the break fluid resivour and that dissapears into the bulkhead, where does this lead ? i will try what you said first tomorrow it does point to a air/vac leak somewhere, thanks for the help. alz
yes the pipe on the servo just pulls out do it carefully, so not to damage the gromet, the other end should be attatched to a vacuum pump, a spaner will be needed, it should be by the right side of the dip stick,if it is not follow it down,, dont knock the air con pipes, i think they cross the servo.
nickforty
Hi Mark, what happened with your problem? I have the same problem a constant hissing type noise that stops when I touch brake pedal, when car moving or stopped. No performance or other problems at the moment. Thank you, Nick
