Scoby
Please forgive me if this has been asked before, i am new here and couldn't find anything. I recently had to give up my beloved ST170 for my current 1.6 Zetec 05 Focus climate, but i'm missing the power and looking into tuning. The dealer stats say my car develops 115bhp from it's puny engine, does this mean it is the 1.6 Zetec SE Ti-VCT with variable cam timing? or is it just plain SE? i have looked on the internet and can't find a definite answer, can anyone help? Thanks in advance. Scott.

mross
Hi Scoby I can help on this one my wife has the same car if it is the 1.6 115bhp TI-VCT engine then you can tell by looking under the hood. Looking at the rocker cover you will see two cam position sensors on the left hand side (on drivers side) one for each cam, then on the far right hand side at the end of the rocker cover you will also see two receiving sensors, all 4 sensors have multi plugs on them and you should see them all clearly. These sensors are responsible for advancing the timing hence TI-VCT and determining the exact position of each cam at any given time so the correct amount of advance or !Removed! can be made by the ECU. If you don't see these 4 sensors then its the 100 bhp engine you have and not the 115 TI-VCT, this is the only way visually of knowing. Don't be to worried about the performance unless its really bad as they don't feel quick at all by there very nature i thought the same about my wife's car, its got a lot to do with the power to weight ratio and either engine has not got a lot of torque really. Hope this info helps, let me know what you find. PS: Just a bit of info, the Zetec SE was replaced with the Duratec engine range sometime in 2005. Scoby
Thanks for the info guys! i think the reason my car isn't coming up on the ford search is because you need certain things to run it and my macbook may not have them, that's what i'm hoping anyway! I know the car is slow, i am planning a swap for a 2 litre duratec, or a remap, cams, exhaust and perhaps throttle bodies. I just wanted to make sure it is the actual VCT i have before i do anything, my end goal is a reliable, bulletproof 200 hp range so the 2 litre may be the way to go, i have 10K loan to spend on it, have considered an ST but the sleeper looks and something different is really appealing. If it turns out to be the 100, i'll go through that dealership like a ton of bricks!! Man i miss my ST170!! Talking about the Duratec, i know my ST was badged as Duratec, but was actually a Zetec, how do you know for sure if it's a Duratec? my focus says Zetec on the back, but i think that's the trim? Oh, my car is a march 05 so it should be the Zetec. If it is the Duratec, will it still have the sensors on either side of the cam covers? mross
Yeah the Zetec on the back of the tail gate is the trim level nothing else, the engine zetec, duratec are confusing i agree. Yes if its the 115 bhp unit it has to have these sensors i mentioned earlier on either end of both cams weather its a zetec or a duratec unit, if there not there i am 100% certain its not a TI-VCT unit. Scoby
Thanks artscot, my first car was a civic, and i had nothing but grief from it, had the engine rebuilt and everything but the over-revving, to redline still persisted when at the lights, spent a fortune on it, until finally it came down to a faulty thermostat, left a very bad taste in my mouth, plus type Rs are common as muck in Scotland, as you probably know, and i'm a ford man to be honest, as my dad was, he shat a brick when i brought a honda home lol, he had a mk1 RS1600i when i was a kid, since then he's had capri 2.8s and a three door cosworth, sold the cossie when i was 15, never forgave him for that lol. ford focus edge
If i had 10k to blow on my car id not even look at a focus tbh lol id get something like this http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2087649.htm Yes its a volvo but its the perfect sleeper weapon + people will think ur a copper and get outta ur way muahahah also its a volvo so chances are itl never go wrong that particular one is running about 348bhp so thats 300+bhp of sveeewish reliablenes yah :P . You must of bought the one faulty honda make every 10yrs we had an accord 2.4 type-s it was naff UNTIL you reved the f*** of it and my god it shot of only downside was the handling was twitchy where as the st220 we got to replace it feels alot more planted. billybjo
Just for info, my wifes 2009 Ka also didn't show up on Ford Etis. When we used the VIN it did. This was because it was first registered in Jersey. So obviously they don't update the records once it gets re-registered.
