owenm179
This may be the wrong section so apologies if there's a more fitting one. I just wanted to share my experience of DPF additives, namely Liqui Moly DPF Protector. I've had 2 expensive (£1800+) DPF issues with my 2015 Ford Focus 2.0 Duratorq TDCI (150) Euro 6, since my ownership began in 2018. Since having these issues I've kept a close eye on the DPF, all related data and preventative measures. I'm not massively clued up on this so please feel free to correct me but in the live data of my car using an Autel diagnostic machine, I have 2 DPF related data points. Both are soot loading of the DPF, however one is "closed loop" and one is "open loop". My understanding is "closed loop" is based off DPF differential pressure/exhaust differential pressure sensor values and "open loop" is a calculation of revs, speed, MPG miles travelled etc etc. My DPF will tend to active regen when open loop reaches 85%, with the exhaust temp rising to 600°c and lasting approx 10 mins which is all fine and indicates a functioning, unblocked vaporiser. During normal use with no additive, the open & closed loop DPF soot loading values climb fairly evenly with the open loop always being around 20-30% more than the closed loop. However, when using the DPF additive I've noticed that the open loop climbs at its normal rate (as it's a calculation rather than an actual value) and the closed loop (based off the pressure differential sensors) climbs extremely slowly, sometimes even dropping on a motorway run (when an active regeneration isn't in progress). The only conclusion I can draw from this is that the additive either reduces the amount of soot being produced, or allows the soot to be burnt off at normal operating temperatures. I've put 2 examples of the figures when 2 regens happened, one with and one without additive: Without additive: Open Loop: 85%. Closed Loop: 56% - regeneration triggered and both reduced With additive: Open Loop: 86%. Closed Loop: 17% - regeneration triggered and both reduced. Interested to hear people's thoughts on the matter :)
