New engine in Ranger rattles at 2000 rpm when cold

Featured Replies

I'm after a bit of advice or help.  I have a 2017 Ranger 2.2 Diesel, and have just had a new engine fitted by my local ford main dealer. Not sure if it's a ford remanufactured or ford reconditioned, but it did come from Fords parts.  Also had new turbo and new injectors (old ones jammed open destroying the previous engine)

This new engine when cold makes a rattling noise when accelerating and the noise starts around 2000 pm.  Once the engine is up to temperature it's nowhere near as noticeable. Fords are stating this is how they are and that Ranger engines are noisey but I don't remember the old one ever making this noise when cold. Is this usual noise?

Sounds very normal to me 🤔

Newer diesel engines take longer to warm up than the old ones.

PS: Your profile is out of date.

How long since engine fitted? The first 1000 miles or less the engine will be noiser than normal as the injectors take time to calibrate/ learn. Esp noticeable on rangers for some reason. Surprised the ford dealer didn't mention it before you drove off

No they didn't mention that, first 2 times it went back. Engine has only done about 40 miles. It went back 2 times for other faults after new engine was fitted (fuel leak, air intake manifold leak, oil leak to name a few).  On 3rd attempt they adjusted the injectors values as they said they were not quite right. But it made no difference to the noise. It was then mentioned it may quiet down as the engine learns. But this came from same mechanic who had sent it out with the faults listed above so had no confidence in what he was saying
