Catastrophic engine failure

Featured Replies

Hi. looking for some advice if possible.

Last week I had a warning light come on stating there was an issue with the oil pump so we stopped the vehicle straight away and then a day later recovered the vehicle to Ford. The vehicle is on a 21 plate ranger and is just out of warranty, it’s only done 58k miles and it was service by Ford last year. On Friday I was informed by Ford that the vehicle has had catastrophic engine failure and the bill will be 7.5k for a new engine. This is the 3rd vehicle I’ve bought from this dealership and I’m feeling frustrated. The lady who gave me the news on Friday said she needs to speak with management on Monday as they had all left.
When we bought this vehicle I was a co owner of a business ans we also bought another one almost identical, I’ve since sold my share in the business but I’ve been informed that the other ranger has also needed a new engine recently.

Could I have people’s thoughts please as come Monday I be speaking with the dealership decision makers.

Hi,

There are a few known issues on the 2.0 EcoBlue engines.  I suspect this one has wetbelt failure which clogged the oil pump.

If it's got full Ford service history at the correct intervals and is only just out of warranty then I would definitely be pushing them to replace the engine at their cost.

Agree with Tom.

If it has correct service history.

If you get messed about send an e mail to Ford UK CEO as below

⚠️ Ranger 2.0 EcoBlue – Engine Failure Immediately After Wet-Belt Replacement

Hi all,
Posting a short summary of an ongoing issue in case it helps other Ranger / EcoBlue owners.

Vehicle: 2020 Ford Ranger 2.0 EcoBlue
Work: Wet timing belt replacement + MOT
Dealer: Ford Dalkeith
Mileage: ~87k

What happened

  • Truck was running perfectly before the repair (MOT emissions 0.03 the day before).
  • Full Ford service history.
  • During the job I was told the engine had been started and brought to temperature, and an oil leak was found from the new cover.
  • Later I was told the engine wouldn’t start and that the correct crankshaft locking tool had not been used on the first attempts.
  • Timing was eventually found one tooth out and corrected.

I collected the vehicle once it was running.

Failure the next day

After only a few miles:

  • Engine shuddered
  • Lost power
  • Cut out
  • Wouldn’t restart

Recovered back to Ford.

Dealer findings

  • Failed oil pressure test
  • Metallic debris in sump
  • Diagnosis: big-end bearing failure
  • Recommendation: replacement engine (~£10k)

Key concerns

Technical advice suggests that EcoBlue engines run briefly even if timing is 1–4 degrees out — but this causes rapid damage to crank bearings.
This sequence appears consistent with:

  1. Incorrect timing on first start
  2. Engine running while out of phase
  3. Bearing failure shortly after

Current status

  • The Motor Ombudsman has accepted the case for investigation, As Ford Dalkeith are not accepting any blame. They have even changed their notes from what they shared with me over the phone.
  • SAR request submitted; workshop notes contain omissions compared with verbal statements
  • Trading Standards aware and monitoring
  • Courtesy vehicle has been withdrawn after 73 days even though my truck is dismantled. They want me to pay for storage of the truck as the Ombudsman carried out their investigation.

Sharing this to help others

If you’re getting a wet belt changed on an EcoBlue engine, I strongly recommend:

  • Confirm they use the full Ford locking-tool kit from the start of the job
  • Ask for photos before assembly
  • Check mileage before/after
  • Don’t drive it if anything feels off after collection

If anyone has had a similar issue after a belt change, I’d be interested to hear.

Philip

That's very bad.

I hope you get it sorted soon and that Ford Dalkeith pay for the whole thing.
