Whining noise from underneath 2020 Ranger 2.0 LTD

Featured Replies

I have a 2020 2.0 Ranger LTD.

When I press the ignition button, I am getting a whining noise from underneath the car, the sound seems to be coming from just over halfway back down the car, maybe inline/just behind the back doors.  If I do not turn the engine on, the whining will stop after 30 seconds, however when I start the engine the noise starts again and keeps going.  It is loud enough that you can hear ir when you are sitting in the car with the doors closed and the engine idling.  The noise does not change when revving the car or driving/accelerating, which would lead you to believe that it is electrical, sounds like a pump of some kind with a bad bearing.  When I look under the car, I cannot see any obvious pumps, etc  Any ideas what it might be? thanks

Low pressure fuel pump.  Perfectly normal to hear it whining.

Yes the sound would be similar to a pump  and could be a fuel pump, is it actually in the tank? if so would be in the right area, but the whining is noticeably more than normal.  How susceptible are they to going? thanks

Yes it's inside the tank.  It will be louder if the tank is low on fuel.

They don't fail very often.  Ford only started fitting them to diesels fairly recently.  Older Ford diesels just relied on the suction from the mechanical HP pump on the engine.  So if you've changed from an older Ford that may explain why you're noticing it.

I have owned this one for the past three years, so noise is definitely a new one.  Think it is getting louder, so no choice but to bring it in to Ford tomorrow.
