How do I tell if I have a wet belt engine?

Featured Replies

I have a 21 plate Fiesta and I recently bought a 24 plate Focus Titanium which has the EcoBoost engine. How do I tell if it's got a wet belt or a chain?

What power engine is the Fiesta? A 100 ps could still be a wet belt. If so it will look as below. The Focus is chain/oil pump belt as Alex has said.

Both are chain cam with wet oil pump belt

Is there anywhere online that confirms this as I rang my local Ford dealer this morning and they told me both were wet belts?

I think it's 125bhp but not sure how to tell?

We’re confirming online here.

Both have wet belts for oil pump.

Either the service desk person hasn’t a clue (quite possible) or they know that it still has a wet belt for oil pump.

Okay, thanks. I suspect you're right and the service desk hadn't got a clue!

That must have been covered when you bought and insured it?

However, if you really don't know, take a look at your V5C registration document. In "Vehicle Details" on the inside page, item P2 gives net power in kW. A 125ps is about 92 kW. 100ps is about 74kW.

The Focus is 125 then. Sounds as if the Fiesta might be a 95ps. Is it a very late pre-facelift? The 95ps was discontinued when the facelift (Mk 8.5) was introduced, the good news is that version is chain cam (but still wet belt for the oil pump.)

Have a quick look under the bonnet to confirm. The chain cam version is as below (may not have the engine cover), the wet belt is as posted earlier, with the shiny heat shield over the turbo. They're quite different as you can see.

BHP can be checked for free here.  Just scroll past the 'paid for' stuff at the top.

Yes my Fiesta is very similar to this one so hopefully I have escaped death by wet belt 🙂

Well, partly anyway. We still have our wet oil pump belts to worry about on the revised engine!

I had another play with that, putting in details of a couple of previous cars to see if it came up with the correct data.

It did - and also came up with a "previously seen advert" for one of them which showed the asking price. Not seen that before - put a few more in for fun but that was the only one where it came up.

Yes but the loading on that will be significantly less so with regular oil/filter changes using the correct oil it should be okay... famous last words!

Time will tell but that's the theory. The 1.5 in the ST  has an annual service interval, anyway, but if I had a chain cam 1.0 I'd still be inclined to do annual oil changes, as I did with the wet belt version.

Yes I plan on doing the oil every other year with Ford doing the others to maintain the service history in case I don't keep it long term. If decide to keep it then I will service it myself every year.

Hi there I’ve just purchased a 2020 Ford toureno 1.5 tdci how can I find out if it has a wet belt thanks

The 1.5 TDCI never had a wetbelt.

If it's an EcoBlue then it will have a small chain in addition to the dry belt.  Those chains can fail.  They were replaced with a thicker chain from around 2023.

I've got a Ford Ecosport ST-Line on a 69 plate.

The BHP check tells me that the model has an EcoBoost 140 Start/Stop 998cc engine.

But I can't find anywhere that confirms whether or not this has a wet belt? The owners Manual is no help and neither were Ford Service department. Any ideas where I can go next please?

Hi,

It will be wet belt.

Check underbonnet if you want to confirm - this is a wet belt engine:
