DPF filter showing blocked at 217% 1.5 duratorq

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Looking for some assistance with an issue with my Ford Transit connect, its a 2019 model, 1.5 duratorq diesel engine.

I got a few messages saying the DPF was regenerating over a few weeks, then a few days ago got another message saying DPF over limit, service now, see manual. I have since cleaned the DPF with cleaner and then went for a 10 mile run at 3k revs to clear the engine out.

I have an iCarsoft CR Max and the DPF is now running at 10 millibar at idle and 80 at 3k revs.

The inferred closed loop is at zero percent soot as per attached photo.

But the inferred open loop is showing 217%, also see photo attached. This from looking online appears to be a calculation based on several factors, I am not sure where to go with this and what to do to clear it, any help would be appreciated. The CR Max doesn't appear to have the ability to clear it so may have to be a garage visit.

Thanks

Robert

These figures are not very good if that is the Differential Pressure, which it might might not be on that car, 1 millibar and 2 or 3 at higher revs is what I would expect from a DPF in good condition.

I have often wondered how the PCM differentiates between the inferred Open and Closed Loop Soot Loading, I could only guess that the proportion of short runs to long runs is quite high.

If your iCarsoft can do a Forced Regeneration you could try that, FORScan can do one for a lot of cars, I'm not sure about your one though.

I'm not sure how that Engine does its Regenerations and you didn't say how many miles the van has done but if the Regenerations are occurring properly then it may be that the DPF is reaching the end of its life.

They arent differential pressures, it's the inlet pressure to the DPF.

I've just downloaded Forscan, will try that tomorrow to reset the learned values.

My comments...

If the cleaner worked for 3 weeks but the problem is back then it isn't regenerating and something is preventing that?

Personally, I wouldn't reset values without finding out the root cause of the problem of why it isn't  regenerating which can be many. Although the total disagreement between the 2 soot values is very strange - has anyone else reset them?

Also, I'd avoid forced regen if possible as this can damage DPF, unless, after investigating list of suggestions below, (which isn't  exhaustive-pun!) there is no other option)

Suggestions:

Look at O'Rileys Autos You Tube channel. He does loads of Transits (vaporiser - see below) He probably uses cleaner at that 217% level I think but it is getting worryingly high.

You can get aerosol cleaners on e-Bay, as you may know.

Check differential pressures at idle (below 10 mbar?) and 3000 (absolute max 80mbar?)

Check vaporiser (if fitted) for blockage, glow plug and pump function and fuses)

That is the most likely thing based on my own and Jimmy's experience (see below) but there are other causes.

Thermocouple readings for sanity check?

Air leaks, split pipes, EGR, turbo operation, etc?

DPF is usually victim, not cause, must find out why it can't regenerate, otherwise, even if you force regen it, the problem will soon be back?

Just my thoughts on checks, compare with O'Rileys ideas, others and do what you like!
