Spare Wheel Locking assembly won't undo

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've recently purchased a 2021 Ranger. The locking assembly on the spare wheel will not undo.

Initially the key wouldn't go fully in - but I applied WD40 & PlusGas and it now seems to go in all the way - but the key will not turn in the lock (almost as though its the wrong key - I have 3 identical keys from the previous owner). The locking assembly does rotate on the rod.

The wheel lock type is 2019-2403120, I believe.

At various intervals, I've re-applied lubricant to the lock itself & the rod to which the lock assembly is attached. Still no joy.

I can see a clear plastic washer at the top of the lock assembly - should I try to prise that off to give lubricant better access?

Should I give the brass part where the key is inserted some vigorous taps ?

Should I give the whole locking assembly even more vigorous taps ?

Any thoughts/advice appreciated.

Thanks

Stewart

WD40 and Plusgas both evaporate quite quickly.  If you can get some 3in1 oil or even a dribble of diesel in there that'll sit and soak through without evaporating.

Worst case scenario just drill the barrel out.  Or have a locksmith do it for you.

I ended up cutting the lock off my raptor with grinder as I tried for over a month trying to soak mine in wd/ penatrating oil / diesel  both nothing worked broke two keys trying

For anyone with this problem in the future where the lock has completely seized; most angle grinders won't fit under there. (with eye protection) Smash the lock with a hammer, the metal is very brittle and will just smash apart.
