3.2 auto gearbox delay

Featured Replies

Hi all .

Im new here and have an issue with my 2018 Wildtrak 3.2 automatic transmission

For last few months I’ve been trying to fix it and I’m pulling my hair out .

Gearbox had a delay at start up and after a journey if it sat parked for 10 minutes or more . A strong oil smell was also present.

So , I’ve had gearbox completely checked over , new valve unit fitted in it , software checked, new torque converter, new oil pump and although it has much improved, it still has a delay at times and heated oil smell.

Any help much appreciated!!!!

Strong smell indicates the fluid is cooking, cooling issues

Has the fluid been flushed out?

You may need to go aftermarket on the cooler loop and improve

Or there's an internal fault causing slip/friction issues

Would wrong fluid level have same effect?
Sometimes when I start moving , I get about 50 feet or so and I loss drive completely. I have to move it from D to R a few times before I regain drive and it then drives perfectly until I need to manoeuvre again , were it then has a delay from D to R .

Yes, fluid would be the first check.

Also, has it even got the right fluid in?? Very important

If you've changed the valve body and solenoids AND the main pump AND the TC then it's either wrong, cooked or low fluid or an internal fault

Thanks .

Oil type definitely correct.
Do you know if there is an oil cooler bypass valve? I’m thinking that if it was stuck open , it would effect cooling of the oil and the oil pressure.

On most there isn't, they cool from start up, but I don't know, sorry, you'll have to find out

Check level then, transmission warm (properly) and after ensuring it had just ran through every gear before stopping.

Leave engine running in Park

Ensure Level ground and check level

Thanks again .

They’re not handy to check oil level , but it was ok .

I spoke to a guy this morning, and he says my issues point to a faulty or damaged oil pump . He’s came across this before.

Ill update here when I change it .

But you've changed that once?

Yes , but the pump can easily be damaged if you don’t refit gearbox the correct way , so had a rethink and I’ve decided to try another gearbox to see if it’s the problem. Everything inside my own gearbox seems fine , no signs of wear etc , but obviously something ain’t right .
I should have that for the end of this week.

Update.

Im awaiting a replacement gearbox

So , whilst working on removing gearbox  we noticed that no oil was coming from oil cooler when disconnecting it . A check with the air hose confirmed a blockage .
New oil cooler fitted to existing gearbox and oil pump , and it is running perfectly.
