More ranger issues

So after my last adventure with a fault (finally fixed by local dealer after a month) we have a new one.

Last night was going down the M4 at about 60, up a steady hill, power loss, service spanner on dash and warning that hill descent system error (or words to that effect)

Pulled to the hard shoulder, ignition off, restarted and tried to drive off but obviously in limp mode. Turned ignition off again and back on, car started but when pressing accelerator it done nothing at all, no rise in revs. Turned ignition off, and this time wouldn't start back up. No attempt to turn over, have power to dash and lights etc

Had vehicle recovered, and that's where I'm at. I will be getting forscan codes after work but there's currently no errors on dash.

I know the original error is often wheel speed sensor but there must be more to it for car to not even try to start.

Any suggestions welcome, trying to get some ideas before I can take a look after work basically.

Cleared the codes (so many of them) egr, brakes, injectors, gear position, abs so on, so many codes

All working fine since, no codes at all

Only thing I did do before the issue was top up washed fluid, so maybe for water somewhere I shouldn't 🤷‍♂️

Check battery performance, check you haven't got a loose or dirty earth anywhere

Now that was a first thought because I had a performance with local ford dealer fixing a problem couple of months ago, which turned out to be an earth fault but that was way back in read wheel arch.

I had a quick look on the side of the M4 but couldn't see anything obvious.

So far no codes showing, don't quite a few local miles.

This thing is the biggest pain in the ***** I've ever owned.

Now, at random it's getting really juddery, like it's running out of fuel. I have taken to leaving my laptop in the car at all times.

The only errors on forscan are for an earth to antenna and several errors for gear lever position sensor, the car is a manual.

It's not throwing any lights up, and clearing errors in forscan doesn't solve the problem . Turning the car off until the power fully turns off (the relay click after 10 minutes or whatever) resets the car and it all works fine. Could be for an hour or for a week.

The only other thing that stands out to me is MPG has gone down. It's always been 27.4 mpg, considering I drive the same trips most days, it's makes sense it doesn't change. This week's it's dropped to 27.3 and today 27.2 mpg.

.....and this week is much colder and darker.

I would hardly call a drop of 27.4 to 27.3 (or even 27.2) an issue to be concerned about.

Today it showing as 26.8 mpg, it's shown as 27.4 for the last 5 months or so, my Aircon is set to same temp as always, running the same journeys as always, just strikes me as related that's all

The outside air temperature is getting colder. Your engine is taking longer to warm up.

Your headlights will be on more. Possibly the wipers will be used more.

You say the Aircon is set to the same temperature, lets just assume 21oC When the outside air is 18 or 19oC then the heater doesn't have to do much to heat the cabin. When the outside air is only 7oC then car heater is going to use more of the engine heat to warm the cabin, which adds to the time it takes for the engine to reach optimum operating temprature.

Both my own cars, Focus 2.0 EcoBlue and Ranger Stormtrak 2.0 EcoBlue get better MPG in the summer than they do in the winter.

Like I said, just seems oddly timed to me. Aircon is always on lowest temp all year around. I'm running maybe 20 miles a day on average, that's a visible reduction in MPG over a small space of time and a small amount of miles, that's all I'm saying. Was just mentioning anything I thought could be relevant in the hope of triggering ideas or suggestions 🤷‍♂️
