Drive Shaft Removal

Hi

I'm just replacing the engine on my focus 1.8 TD 2002. According to the haynes manual, the driveshafts have to come out. I've removed the drivers side OSF with relative simplicity, but the near side, UK passenger side, drive shaft won't come out. The hub assembly and disc are removed with the shaft unrestricted from just 'pulling out'. But it won't pull out. Haynes manual says I need a slide hammer to pull it out, Ford TIS says I need a special tool to push it out. Slide hammer didn't manage to pull it out.

Any ideas how to get it out?

thanks

can you get a lever in behind it? mind not damage the gearbox casing

No, cant get behind it due to drive shaft being encircled by the gearbox casing around 3/4 of it and the car bulk head/firewall obstructing the remaining 1/4. Do they need force, such as a hammer and drift into the opening left on the other side by the drive shaft already removed? The TIS shows a 'special tool' going in the opposite side which is a long drift with a hex head. Not sure why it has an hex head if you just hit it with an hammer? thanks

Hi, the tool number is 308-192 (16-057)

Is that a posh way of saying 'big hammer'? :-)

hmm, the tool i see is 308-256. its a long handle with a fork like head, inserted between the gearbox and the driveshaft.

big hammer sounds good though

Managed it in the end. Got a pry bar underneath the car and with a lot of force and a dead-blow hammer on the end of the pry bar, the drive shaft slowly came out
