Brake problem

Featured Replies

Hi, I have a 2022 bi turbo Ford Ranger and I have an issue with breaking hard. The brakes operate fine and normal Driving, slowing down on bins to stop at junction no problem. My issue is when I have to stop in a real hurry Jeep is running out 25 or 30 hours further than it should anyone else have an issue like this they can help me with.?

Welcome!
I'm really quite confused with the "on bins" "Jeep", "...30 hours further"
Can you please clarify (unless it's me)?
Do you have MOT testers that could check for drag, unbalance, efficiency etc?

There is only one thing that posts gibberish like this ..... AI 🤣

Would it be confirmed if it was a OPW AI and how is AI allowed to become a member, do we not test?

DEI policy, you can't discriminate against an AI bot 🤣

Hopefully @Debru679 will come back with something that the Turing test can be applied to?

Sorry guys, using microphone didn’t work out great for me🙈🙈😁
genuine problem here, I’ll translate it all now

2022 2L bi turbo auto Ranger and I have an issue with breaking hard. The brakes operate fine in normal Driving, slowing down on bends or stopping at a junction are  no problem. My issue is when I have to stop in a hurry the truck is running out 25 or 30 yards further than it should. Have to absolutely stand on break pedal to get anti lock breaking to kick in if at all. anyone else have an issue like this they can help me with.?

Passed the test with this problem 2 months ago

I own and drive a Ranger and a Focus both 2.0 EcoBlue's. Both have good brakes and in normal everyday driving the vehicles can be slowed down or brought to a complete stop without any problems.

However, not that I've tried this more than a couple of times, the Focus will stop in a much shorter distance than the Ranger under emergency braking.  This is of no surprise to me since firstly the Focus weights a lot less than the Ranger, and secondly the Focus has disc brakes on all 4 wheels, but the Ranger has rear drum brakes.

The ABS takes more activating on the Ranger which is to avoid it constantly operating when driving fully loaded and/or towing. Once the ABS has 'kicked in' then it's operation undoubtedly shortens the distance taken to bring the Ranger to a complete halt. If you're expecting braking performance like that of a family saloon car then you're going to be disappointed. As you have said yourself your vehicle passed the inspection test only two months ago. Had there been any issues with the brake system then I suspect it would have been reported as a fail.

When were the rear drums last fully removed and the brake shoes inspected for wear ? Perhaps the shoes need replaced or just deglazed ?

I'll aim to avoid being tailgated by this type of vehicle?

That's an odd question to ask. Or was it a statement ? 🤔

If I'm being tailgated and have to emergency or even normal stop with my better braking distance then a Class 7 (from what you say) is going to be in my boot?
Likewise, if they have this increased stopping distance, extra care is needed to ensure they can stop for pedestrians using crossings and other circumstances etc etc?

There's no real need to worry about stopping for pedestrians, I don't think they would cause much damage to my truck 🤣

Thanks for reply. I’ve been driving these types of vehicles for the past 12/13 years, on my second ranger and had a hilux  before that so  I’m used to the normal braking distances. This is different, I assumed when it passed the test my brake shoes were good. Guess I’ll start with these and see how I get on from there.

On second thoughts could it be that you are not getting full servo braking assistance?

Could be a problem with the servo vacuum, or the servo unit has an air leak. This would not be detected with a vehicle inspection, it would just mean that more brake pedal force would be needed.

It could just be that it has rubbish brakes.

I remember how bad mid 90's to 2000s Transits were!!

See if they've cheapened the brakes (fitted smaller ones)

It's easy to test the Servo if it has one, although some cars have an electronic version.

With the Engine off press the Brake Pedal about 15 times to exhaust the Vacuum in the Servo and start the Engine with your foot still pressed on the Pedal. If the Pedal sinks when the Engine is started then your Servo is working.

With either type of system I would expect a fault to be logged if the Servo or Electronic Brake Booster was not working.

Worth noting that ABS doesn't reduce stopping distances under normal conditions.  It was never designed for that and shouldn't be expected to kick in very often.  All it does is allow you to retain steering control on a damp or loose surface where a wheel would otherwise lock and cause the tyre to skid.  If your wheels aren't being braked hard enough to lock then the ABS has no reason to kick in.

The standard problem with rear drums is that the shoes aren't adjusted close enough to the drum meaning the hydraulic force is wasted pushing those further instead of pushing the front pads immediately.  They do have auto adjusters to take up the slack as the shoes wear but in my experience they never work properly.  Shoe adjustment would be my first check in this case.

If you're still using Main Dealer servicing, a drums-off brake check should be included with next years service (4th year) and they will likely suggest brake fluid replacement as an optional extra as well.
