Ford illuminated front grille

Featured Replies

Hello, can anyone help with the issue I am having with getting my aftermarket illuminated Ford lettering front grill working correctly.  I have a 2023 Ford Wildtrack T9 and bought an aftermarket front grille that’s the type where the letters light up.  What should happen is with the lights set to auto you open the vehicle using the remote the DRL side lights come on and the grill is supposed to flash a couple of time along the lettering left to right and then stay on with the DLR side lights.  I have been unable to find any wiring instructions on the internet other than the instructions for the Predator Night Hawk Grille https://duckduckgo.com/?ia=videos&origin=funnel_home_website&hps=1&q=how+to+fit+a+2023+ford+ranger+T9+front+grille&atb=v505-7&iax=videos&iai=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DL_riKX1u5og obviously this is not the same grille but I assumed that this would be powered in the same way.  I followed the wiring instructions connecting the positive that’s live to the third wire in on the headlight connector, the third wire is grey with a blue chase and the earth to the bottom of the bottom of connector plug that’s black with a green chase.  After connecting up the grille worked but only partially, flashing along the letters all the way but then only lighting up to R and not to the D which stays off.  I know that the grill works correctly because if I connect it directly to the battery it works as it should.  After much trying I gave up and had my alarm engineer who was coming over anyway rewire the grille, he ran a live directly to the main battery connected a relay to the trigger wire which he says is the negative, now the grill will not come on with the lights when set to auto and only work if you put the lights to manual but in manual the DLR’s are on but head light don’t come on, the grille does but doesn’t flash along its just on constantly almost like it has taken the place of the headlights.  He says that in the daylight the grille will function as it should and he believes this is because the trigger wire connected to the grey with a green chase is not correct, I am now completely confused and don’t know why this is so complected.  There are only two wires to the grille a live and an earth red for live a black for earth.  Can anyone tell me what we are doing wrong.  Thanks.

Putting it quite bluntly it sounds like a dogs breakfast.

Find yourself a 'good' professional Auto Electrician and they should have it sorted in half an hour.

You say that there are only two wires to the grill, a live and an earth (red and black) which makes total sense. So what is this "Trigger" wire that keeps getting mentioned ?

You also say that you know that the grill works correctly if you connect the red and black wires directly to the battery. So at least you can rule out a faulty product.

Since I've no idea what your particular grill is meant  to do, I can only guess that with only two wires it must be taking all the power from just one of the DRL's which could possibly be to much. The use of a correctly wired relay could overcome the problem but it sounds like your alarm guy does not understand the workings of a modern cars electrical system.
