Focus Fuel Gauge

I bought a Focus Zetec 1.6 petrol (new model) from JCT600 in Leeds just over a month ago. As soon as I got the car I realised the fuel gauge was not working correctly, with readings showing all over the place. To cut a long story short JCT600 have just replaced the fuel sender unit (under warranty) but the problem is still there. I filled up yesterday and the gauge went immediately to full. Today however the gauge shows various readings from 1/4 to 3/4 full so it is clearly not working correctly.

JCT600 have been in touch with a Ford dealer who apparently told them that if replacing the fuel sender unit does not cure it then it is 'just part and parcel, and a characteristic' of that particular car. Needless to say that comment is incorrect and I have told them that I do not accept it.

Any suggestions as to what the problem may be would be very appreciated.

Thanks, David

Could just be a poor connection on the wires.

I had this on my Escort and after a wiggle on the wires it is working fine now.

its a common problem on the focus and is usually cured by a new sender unit.

i carnt understand why the gauge still plays up if they fitted a new unit because this problem is caused by a faulty fuel pump module which will have a poor / open circuit contact. A new revised fuel level sender card assembly should be fitted. and usually cures the fault all i can say is that the gauge itself must be faulty. these can be reset and i wouldnt accept the car with the gauge not working right would they recover you for free when you run out of petrol!

Whilst on this subject......

i have a 02 Zetec 1.6 Focus.

When i switch the engine off both the fuel and temperature gauges

bounce to the half or mid point.

When i start up they both return to the correct positions.

Is this normal or a similar problem ?

Cheers

Roger
